Aricept

I need some input.

My soon to be 87 year old mother has been on Aricept for several years. During the past few months both her mental and physical health have been deteriorating. She has many of aricepts side effects (headache, diahrehha, nausea). She is losing her memory of the past few years and cannot remember what she had for dinner an hour before. The owner of her group home consulted with the group home doctor and it has been suggested that she should be taken off aricept since it is losing it's effectiveness. This drug costs $200.00 each month. Does anyone have any experience --positive or negative as to what happens once a person is taken off aricept? Please let me know. Thanks!

My mother had alzheimers but was never on aricept so we were not confronted with your decision to make. I found some info about aricept on the web that you can check out:

I attended an Alzheimer's educational conference last summer that addressed this same question. A physician decided that a nursing home resident had been on Aricept so long that it was no longer effective and discontinued it. The presenter, a nursing home administrator, said the woman immediately became worse and suffered an overall cognitive decline. He called the physician and requested that Aricept be continued. They put her back on it and she returned to the same level as before the medicine was discontinued.

It seems that at least in some instances, Aricept might have a stabilizing effect for a longer period than studies indicated. It would be up to you and her physcian to weigh the side effects against the benefits of Aricept.

Blessings to you and your family. I have somewhat of an understanding of what you are facing.

Several years ago I suffered a severe head injury. I lost both my short-term and long-term memory, I got lost constantly, and I had difficulty solving just minor problems. Doctors told me that at my age little could be done, and they treated me with little more than contempt. (I was never much of a fan of doctors or their poisons in the first place.)

For years It was difficult to read and understand, but I studied constantly, and little-by-little I found things that worked. Ginkgo is a must, so are DHA and EPA (found in fish and/or fish oil capsules). There are many other supplements (DMAE, Sage...), but the one that really seemed to give me the most improvement was Gotu Kola. The improvement in my ability to think seemed to be dramatic in the first 30-60 days.

Gotu Kola is an ancient ayurvedic herb for mental clarity. (The Indians believed that elephants were smart because they ate this "weed.") It's inexpensive, and I take it daily--along with the others. I buy on-line through Swanson or Puritan, and my cost is less that $40/mo. (By the way, you won't have to worry about side-effects, and these supplements are beneficial for many other health matters--heart, eyes, skin...)

I'd sure like to hear from you in a month or two. 'Hope they work.

Regards, Ken
