2nd generation interests

Because of the side chat Claybo and i got into about Arthur C. Clarke story, it occurred to me it might be interesting to know if any of you have interests that your children share. Whether they picked up from you or they introduced you to it.

My kids are all SciFi fans, the boys like Stephen King and Dean R. Koontz novels (i tend to prefer Koontz, but King still gets my interest now and again). i don't read a lot of fiction anymore but what i do is usually one of those guys or scifi. It was a kick to see them reading the classic stuff by Clarke, Asimov, Simak, LeGuin, that had made me think as a teen as well gave me pleasure. And to be able to discuss books with them...get their insights. And watching their insights broaden and mature...WOW! Definitely goes on the plus side of any pro/con list about parenting.

My daughter writes scifi stories too. She's participating in the Nano(something) thing writing a novella (50,000 words) between 11/1 and 11/30.

Are there hobbies, entertainment, crafts you share with your kids?

My oldest son who lives here in AZ, is a workaholic just like his mother; other than that, I can't seem to think of interests we have that are even similar. My youngest left home at 18 and moved to Boston and has only been back to AZ twice so I don't get to see his interests very often. If anything, I think my oldest and I both have an interest in world travel. He also is very personable and gets along with just about anyone. We don't even do similar work.

My son skis, sails and loves camping...all stuff we have enjoyed together. My daughter is not into the outdoor stuff but does enjoy some sports and computers.

My daughter and I enjoy many of the same things although it was probably she who introduced so many of them to me.
my son is into camping, fishing, computers, hiking...most of these things my daughter is not into, except the computer stuff. He probably got some of that from me...my family was big on camping and fishing. My son is a firefighter and more of what I call a mountain man.
now the three of us share the computer interests and the idea of traveling and sharing family time.

Well, all of my kids like to eat like me lol. All can cook, all are great parents..the sons and the daugther. All but one has the same sense of humor. The sad thing is I love to read and they do not, exdcept if it's online or texted to them! We all like to travel. All have remained to go to chruch. Guess in our family the nut didn't fall far from the tree.

my oldest daughter and I were once known as "the Black Martha Stewarts" we love to decorate (our homes and others) very much into children, loves reading and will be there in a heartbeat if friends are in trouble. my youngest and I debate politics and conspiricy theories. I accuse her of being a conservative, she accuses me of being a bleeding heart liberal.

They are both exceptional parents.

Both of my boys love to cook as I do. They are actually better. Both love to hike in the woods, but niether is really into biking like I do.

They also like to do home improvement projects like I, and are waaaaay better at it than I.

My youngest daughter got the photo bug from me. We both love taking pictures especially of nature and animals. Although, she get a lot of good people shots too. Both my girls love to read like I do. They got me to read the Twilight series and we're going to the New Moon movie together next week. All my kids love camping. We use to take them alot when they were younger.

I'm glad I could pass some interest on to them!

My middle daughter shares my love of reading, and have generally the same tastes, or at least share some. I'm not sure of what all she reads. My oldest is a control freak like me - hah! My youngest, 15, is trying real hard not to be like me :) but we'll see what happens in 4 to 5 years.

My son left home at an early age and settled in NM, so like Louise, I don't get to see his interests too often...however, both my daughters have the 'artistic' gene...they are excellent artists and have introduced me to the whole world of visual art.

My daughter and i go hiking together. And bounce ideas, concepts off each other (she writes fiction). She's shown me how to some of computer photo-editing i've learned to do.

SueAnne, don't kids often sort of 'push away' in teens, establishing self...later, they're surer of who they are they don't have as much trouble acknowledging similarities to parents. My boys actually did that with each other pushed away hard as teens...inside our nuclear family they were 'the boys' or O & S, but even Auntys as well as outsiders tended to emphasize their twiness, so i think they need to establish themselves seperately for a while.
