Phrases that are still with me.

Some of these phrases still come to mind or spew forth from my lips. These "sayings" are from the words of my dear , late mother. I bet all of you can add some to this list that are ingrained in your hearts and minds.

1. Finish eating all your food. There are so many hungry people in the world today.
2. Wait until your father comes home.
3. Stop crossing your eyes or they might stay that way.
4. Just wait until you have grandkids of your own and then you will understand what I mean.
5. Don't run with those scissors.
6. Eat your carrots so you don't go blind.
7. Don't get upset over unimportant things.
8. Please close the refrigerator door because you are letting out all that cold air.
9. Don't talk with food in your mouth.

10. This one is from the book of the late Georgia author, Lewis Grizzard, on what his mother always reminded him to do. " Always wear clean underwear, for you never know when you might get in an accident and have to be taken to the hospital, where they might have to cut your underwear off."

That last one was certainly true in my mother's home, what with 3 girls and she was a nurse at the hospital. Boy, did we BELIEVE her!

These things are so funny when we read them but there is a grain of truth in all of them so it is good that we remember them. My mother used to tell me all of those things, including the underwear statement from Lewis Grizzard. I'm glad he gave credit to his mom. He was a wonderful author and I loved all of his books. I think my personal favorite was "Don't Bend Over the in Garden Granny, You Know Them Tates Got Eyes".

My Mom's favorite was "Do as say not as I do." Thanks goodness I did. We do not have a good relationship, although I love her, I am glad I understand unconditional love. I am 55 years old and she still holds my teenage years against me! LOL

All these phrases are very familiar to me as well---I not only heard them some I ajusted a bit and passed them on to my own kids. "Course they didn't always listen! And, yes, there is some truth in all of them-----------but the carrots, well I ate those all the time and I still had eye issues----cataracts in both eyes, wore glasses for over 50 yrs. I still eat carrots and now after 2 surgeries have 20/20 vision, and no presciption glasses. Blind??? Not yet!!

One of my mom's favorites - when someone did something she didn't agree with or approve of, "Everyone to their own notion said the old lady when she kissed the cow"

Another was, "She/he can dish it out but they can't take it"

And still another - "Consider the source" - this was also when she didn't like what someone had said.

Ahhh, eecgeorgia,,,,I later thought of your last one too: "Consider the source"...that one must have been one of my mother's favorite. I had forgotten to include it in my original post , but later thought of it.

I enjoyed all the other's contributions. Fun to think back on these things, isn't it?

WAnne: When I was still working back in Ohio, there was a woman who was really obnoxious and irritating. I told another co worker who was complaining about something she said to just "Consider the source" Somehow(naturally) it got back to the offending woman and she confronted me - throwing a fit because I had called her a "source". I'm not sure she knew what that word means - maybe thought it was some kind of a bad name. Sigh.
