10 Ideas For Sensible Laws

Today on Gawker view link , I read the following list of 10 sensible ideas that, along with healthcare, should become law. Some I absolutely agree with (!!!), some I'm not as sure of (???), some are not really important to me (---). What do you think?

1. Ban all guns, except rifles and shotguns. (!!!)

2. Enforce the separation of church and state. (!!!)

3. Which would lead to the legalization of gay marriage, and also probably abortion. (!!!)

4. Publicly finance all politics. (!!!)

5. Ban advertising by pharmaceutical companies. (Partly so the song 'viva Viagra' no longer gets stuck in my head, causing much embarrassment when I walk around singing it.***) (!!!)

6. Government subsidized journalism. (Anyone who doesn't agree should stop reading anything that originated with, or is on, the BBC.) (???)

7. Significant government support for the arts. (---)

8. Strip Sheriff Joe Arpaio view link of all powers. Immediately. (As the beginning of prison reform.) (???)

9. Legalize illegal immigrants. (???)

10. Legalize drugs. (The Economist has the best argument for this here, if you subscribe. That you can read at this odd site here view link if you don't.) (!!!)

*** This is the author's reason, not mine, but since I read it the tune has going through my head and I should soon start singing it myself.

Granted we don't have health care yet, but we might as well aim for the stars.

Very much with your selections.....BUT add government support for the arts. There many wonderful things we would never enjoy if they did not have a boost from gov. We are a dead people without our cultural base.

I think if you ban hand guns, that only criminals will have them. Including the hundreds of thousands of currently legal hand gun owners that will not give them up.

Not a problem. Sheriff Joe can show other communities how to set up more tent city jails. That should go well here with -10 temps and knee deep snow in February.

quote from article..... "The sheriff says he is keeping the peace, but it seems as if he is doing just the opposite — a useless, reckless churning of fear and unrest."

I'm with the writer on most of the points. Except Nos. 1, 6 and possibly 10 for if 10 is adopted, then drivers' licenses should be forfeited. We have enough problems with drunks on the road killing people to add those tweakin' and freakin' and stoned out of their gourds. Do drugs? Fine! Drive? Naaaaaw. Take a taxi.

Handguns can be carried in a purse much easier than a shotgun and worn under a blazer without a bulge. I'm for keeping handguns legal.

If we had better public transportation systems then the drivers licensing thing would be less problematic.

A bar that I go to for breakfast (so my cigarette smoking friends can meet with me) has a bumper sticker attached to the wall that says something like "Ten Commandments and 200,00 laws to enforce them". Even though I am a strong believer in the separation of Church and State, I would put that on the back of my vehicle.

The more laws you have on the books, the more ways you have to be in violation of the law. Lawyers love it. Judges make celebrated careers. Prisons can be a big part of our economy.

Lets make a few more laws.

1.) No wearing pink and green together.
2.) All shoes provided with strings must be tied.
3.) If you let go of your pants and they don't stay up when you walk, you are publicly indecent.
4.) Left turns between the hours of 6am-10am or 2pm-10pm are now a violation.
5.) You must answer all phone calls. How else is that phone solicitor going to make a living?

For those that don't know me well, my response posted above is all tongue in cheek.

Though I would like to see #3 as a rule of thumb. I'm tired of seeing "men" have to keep one hand on their personal trigger in order to hold up the trousers.
