November 9, 2009 marks the twentieth anniversary of the destruction of the Berlin was an outcome of the war. The wall was stared August 2 1961 with the goal of stopping the refugees that were leaving East Germany to West Germany at the rate of one thousand people each day. In June of that year was the first meeting between the two. The Russians wanted a treaty that would stop the flow of refugees and move the allies out of Berlin. When Kennedy hesitated Khrushchev threatened, all the way up to taking military action. Although a threat it began the political struggle over Berlin that on going President Eisenhower had warned Kennedy that an emergency was brewing in Berlin. At the time of the walls construction was Mayor Willy Brandt who was alive when the wall came down.
