Printer

My Printer, hp deskjet 5150 is on and should be working, but it's not printing?
Why doesn't it print? Anyone?

Thiss happens to me once in awhile after some time and frustration and much to my embarrassment it usually turns out to be the connection to my computer is loose or out entirely. My hp has plug that has a cord leading to a power box attached to a cord which goes to the printer. Either I have stepped on a pulled the cord out of the power box or my lab has been over zealous in finding some morsel of food and disconnected it.

That's the embarrassingly easy solutionl.

Trish, we've all been there. That's another reason I'm founder and CEO of the Ditz Club.

she stated her printer is ON and is not working...so is not the power cord, but could be the usb cable connecting to the computer, I know if the USB end is not seated securely it can prevent it's working... A couple weeks ago my canon printer quit working, subsequently found the print head has failed...right after I bought $80 worth of ink.....with the ink investment, I need now to replace the head as they won't take the ink back....I opened the bulk package...and the print head is as much as a new printer...go figure..hahaha

I had a similar problem with HP and railed and ranted about it for 2 years. Finally, my tech guy suggested I get a new PCI card for my USB ports in the computer (very easy to install), and now it works like a charm! Their tech support stinks! A different guy each time, who does not refer to your email, or the entire email! But if hers is a USB printer, try a new location, or get a new PCI card for the p orts!

Fran,

have to go back to the basics here. Do you know how to check and see if your computer even knows it has a printer connected to it?

Are you familiar with "Network Places" or "My COmputer" or "Control Panel"?

What operating system does your computer have?

Have you google'd your hp printers model and went to the HP website and downloaded the most recent driver for that printer?

SOrry if I sound dense, but its the only way I know how to begin to peel back the layers....

Sometimes with HP printers a print job will get stuck in the print queue [a spooler problem]. You can usually tell this is the case if the printer icon in the lower right shows the job printing, but the page number oh the left is usually higher than the number on the right, ie 6/1. Sometimes deleting the print job will work, but other times it gets stuck and the only remedy for that is to turn off the printer and unplug both the cable from the printer to the computer and the power cable from the back of the printer, turn OFF the computer, wait 30 seconds to 3 minutes, plug everything back in and then boot up the computer. That should completely clear out the print job and you can try again.

HP has a diagnostic utility tool that can help with this if your OS is Vista.

Thanks everyone for your input!! My son came over today, and fixed it. It was me - messing it up somehow? Don't know what I DID???

Fran,

the next thing I was going to ask after those three things I mentioned earlier, was "is your son or another relative close by so they can actually see what you're doing"?

And, lo and behold!

Glad it was an easy fix!

And whatever you did, don't do that! :)
