The Lovely Bones

Alice Sebold writes a powerful story from the viewpoint of a 14 yr old victim of a serial killer. I cried all weekend. Needless to say I will not be going to the picture that is planned.

I read this book when it first came out at the library and it was heartbreaking especially when you can see this really happening. Don't think I will be seeing the picture either, as I hardly ever go to the movies. I'm sure it will come out on dvd a few months after the picture is released, so maybe I will get to see it at that time. Have you read any other books by the same author, or has anyone else here read any of her books?

Alice Sebold's second novel was titled Almost Moon and it was a challenging read. It starts out with a statement from a woman who has just killed her own mother by smothering her with a pillow. She was her mother's caretaker and just snapped.

She also wrote a memoir called Lucky which deals with her rape while she was in college. Evidently the police told her she was lucky as the last rape victim had been murdered. Her stories are on the dark side, to say the least. You definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to read them.

The Lovely Bones was heartbreaking, and powerful. It seems odd to use the term "enjoyed" in connection with the book because of the story matter, but I thought it was a good book. Could not get into Almost Moon though--just too dark.

I don't really think I want to see the Lovely Bones movie though. I'd just rather keep it in the movie in my mind.

Almost Moon was too disturbing for me, could not finish it.

I remember reading Almost Moon as a group read, and submitting group questions to the author, who had agreed to answer them, but she never did. IMO the book was truly almost unreadable, and I don't plan on reading any more of hers.

I'd bought the Lovely Bones book and never could make myself read about it. So definitely won't be seeing the movie. I see and hear enough stuff like that on the news. :'(

....sort of off subject, but Alice Sebold is married to the writer Gary David Gould. He had a very enjoyable book a few years ago, "Carter Beats the Devil". Sort of historical fiction featuring Warren G. Harding, Harry Houdini and Philo Farnsworth. He also had a book out in the summer----can't remember the title, but had Charlie Chaplin as a character. Much less dark than his wife's efforts.

I did read it a long time ago. It was very sad. Reminds me of the
Casey Anthony story.
