Fringe - Earthling

I just finished watching last week's episode which was very good; however, it made me realize that even though this is fiction, becoming obsessed with anything can be destructive. Here's a part of the recap of the show in reference to Broyles' obsession.

"Broyles opens up to Olivia about why this case is so important to him. Four years ago, Fringe division had begun to fall out of favor with the government. He began to stop caring about promotions and just wanted to make the world a safer place. In the process, he became obsessed with the cosmonaut case and it was too much for his wife. In the process of trying to protect his family, he lost them."

This was a very frightening case as the cosmonaut's brother had to contain the space entity that kept leaving his comatose brother's body and turning people into dust by taking all of the radioactivity out of their bodies. The only way he was able to do this was to send huge surges of electricity through his brother's body as soon as he saw the entity trying to get out. This caused his brother to wake up and suffer unbearable pain; he screamed for his brother to stop, but he could not. The entity was a black shadow that appeared to float. Broyles had been contacted by the CIA who told him to back off and that it was their case, but because of his obsession to close the case as MB stated above, he continued to have his team work to solve it. The brother managed to steal his brother's comatose body from the hospital and they tracked him down outside a building in a van. Broyles wanted this to stop so he shot the cosmonaut through the temple and killed him. His body was placed in a lead casket/box and disposed. Broyles went to visit his ex-wife to tell her he had closed the case and she sadly told him she was happy for him. She and her new husband asked him to join them for dinner but he declined. The last scene is between Broyles and the CIA agent who tells him he has a friend in some US Senator. Broyles asks what happened to the cosmonaut and the CIA agent told him that he was sent back into space after his heart started beating again. Broyles was clearly despondent. The end!
