Looking down --

About two feet long and harmless, but at a glance his markings mimic the bad guy --

Nice shots. You have to always look down when hiking.

Well done. Do you know what kind of snake it was? I love the little tree.

He looks like a bull snake to me.
That is one determined little tree, hope he survives.

Not sure what the snake is -- a hiking buddy called it a hognose. He had eaten and was wanting to move slowly, otherwise he would have been long gone! I'm hopin' the little tree makes it -- reminds me a little of Charlie Brown's Christmas tree... all he needs is one red ornament :) and thanks so much for making me feel a part of this group -- you guys have shared some fantastic shots.

Yikes--great picture of the snake--I'm glad it was you and not me. Thanks for sharing.

I thought it might be a hognose snake. They are something else. They will rustle their tail sometimes and hiss and if that doesn't scare you away, they will roll over and play dead. The funny thing is if you roll them right side up, they will flip back upside down immediately. They can also emit a very strong musk odor.

Wow, I didn't know they could do all that. Ha... guess I didn't threaten him enough (or get close enough :) to make him flip over or get musky, or rustle his tail. I do know that catching that first glimpse of his coil out of the corner of my eye sure increased MY heartrate LOL! The eastern diamondback loves these sandhills as much as I do.

Maybe you can help me identify this creature that wanted to web in my front yard? No kidding -- the web stretched for twenty feet. I know he isn't actually a bug, but he did have a hard shell.
