Opinions respected on this!

Today I was working at the Library book sale and saw a nice looking gentleman in line, holding a bag of books. When I realized who it was, I thought that maybe he was buying books to read in jail, or to trade with the inmates. Seriously, I wasn't initially sure why he was there until I saw him asking the couple ahead of him if they had any more books her could carry to their car. Then I realized that he was doing his community service which was part of his sentencing. Awhile later he came and stood next to me and asked me if we needed any more bags brought up or anything and I said that I didn't think so. He thanked me, said 'Have a Good Day', and went back to his job. A co-worker then came up to me and this is how that conversation went:

"Do you know who that was?"

ME: "Yes, how could I NOT? His face was only plastered across all the newspapers and tv screens for weeks this summer"

"I guess so but he is a really nice guy, no matter what he did"

ME: "I can't comment on that because I don't agree with what he did and it's clouding my judgement"

"It's behind him now and he has to live with it"

ME: "I could NEVER live with it. If I thought that God was punishing me by killing my daughter then I would become an atheist. If I did nothing to try to stop it, then I should pay a huge price for stupidity"

I will try to post a clip so you know who this is about.
And yes, he was very jovial and nice to everyone but it was like he was some kind of celebrity. People were talking to him just so they could say they talked to him. And, he was milking it for all it was worth. I didn't like that. Not at all.

Will try to find one that will cooperate! I can't seem to paste it here.
Hold on.

What did you expect the link to bring up? It brings up a legal brief in opposition to a motion to dismiss -- it does tell us what the case is about, though -- was he the father of the girl who died?

Wisconsinites pretty much know this case - but especially Wausau area residents. (The case of Kara Neumann who died of acute diabetes because her parents prayed over her instead of taking her to a doctor.) I am glad I was not a juror. I heard it was pretty hard on those that were, and had some questioning their own religious beliefs, among other things.

As it stands, the Neumanns got one month of jail time each for the next 6 yrs. To be taken separately and to fall around the time of their daughters death. They have 2 other daughters. I hope they are made to take them to the doctor for regular check ups. I think they also got probation but I will have to read more about it. I know they are appealing the conviction of 2nd degree reckless homicide, but I think they should count their blessings.

I could not find a different article that the daily herald would let me copy and paste - they wanted $$ for them. Sorry.

This Motion does explain the case in detail towards the end though. That's what I was looking for.

No problem, I was just wondering if that was the one you wanted, I see that is was.

Interesting sentence. I've heard of similar sentences in other cases, but I'm not sure I agree with it. These parents need to be on probation at the very least until the other two kids grow up -- the state needs to protect them. Do they still have their other two kids or are they in foster homes?

This is not an easy post to comment on, especially because we were not there like you were. I’m very conflicted on this. It does remind me of a joke that I think is actually pertinent. I’m sure many have heard it and I may butcher it a bit, but here goes:

A huge hurricane was coming to the coast with threats of high winds and extensive flooding. People were told to evacuate. But old Jake refused to go when his neighbors came by to check on him on their way out of town to offer him a ride in their van. Nope, old Jake said, I’m placing my faith in God to save me.

Well, the storm hit and the rain and surges were causing extensive flooding and forecasts said it would get worse. The National Guard, checking for remaining citizens, came by in an amphibious personnel carrier to get old Jake. Nope, old Jake said, I’m placing my faith in God to save me.

Hours later the water began to rise dramatically. Old Jake had to go to the second story of his home. Now rescuers came by in a boat to evacuate those still remaining in the area. When they got to Jake’s place he yelled out the window “I won’t go, I’m placing my faith in God to save me.”

The next morning the storm is at its peak, and old Jake is now clinging to his chimney as the water is as high as the roof. Overhead, a helicopter tries in vain to lower a rope ladder in fierce winds to save him, but Jake refuses to grab on thinking to himself, I’m placing my faith in God to save me.

Old Jake is finally swept away in the waters and drowns. - He arrives at the pearly gates and says to St. Peter, “Why did I perish in the storm? I put my faith in God to save me and he let me down.” St Peter looked at him incredulously and said, “He tried to save you, you knucklehead! He sent a van, an amphibious personnel carrier, a boat and finally a helicopter to get you out of harm’s way. What the heck is wrong with you anyway?"

Not sure what I think, especially if I found myself suddenly thrust in his presence like you were. I will tell you this much, I would be more ambivalent toward him than a person responsible for a violent crime, but then, aren’t we all sinners? Honestly, I would have a very hard time with the “what a nice guy he is”. I’d be civil and try to tell myself it is not up to me to judge him for what he did. The big problem I would have is feeling so badly for his daughter for being in such a vulnerable position and having parents making (in my opinion) very poor judgment. It cost his daughter her life, and perhaps pain and agony that could have been avoided.
