I do decorate...primarily because we have Christmas at my home..and there are 7..almost 8 Grandchildren, who are 10 years and younger...so they really make it special. I bake an Angel food cake for dessert, and we turn the lights off....the children gather round the cake..so their little faces are reflected in the glow of the candles on the cake, and we sing Happy Birthday to baby Jesus. It may seem hokey...but it reminds them, and the grown-ups too, that this is the true meaning of Christmas. Lydia....dim the lights...light some candles..play some music that makes you happy...EVERYthing looks better by candle light I have found :).....even those decorations....
Beautiful!!! Thanks, Deb. Maybe even I'll look better by candle light. lol
Thank you Diva,I always laugh at the humorous way you put things, but now,I have to contend with that tune I can't get out of my head.
Last year I tried not to decorate, and my friends protested cause they love to go from "scene" to scene and take it all in.One is the Scandinavian corner complete with skinny skiing Santa's,and humorous snowmen sliding down slopes on make-shift metal trays in lieu of sleds.
Then there are the "trees",wire trees or twig trees (Smith and Hawkins),one with little apples, birds, pine cone angels, and straw stars, another with all the little fairies from the artist Patience Brewster, another tree is all serious with gold, bronze, and silver decorations, and so it goes on throughout the house. It's lots of work, but lots of fun to look at.
And then I do my annual "Pilgrimage" into Manhattan to go up and down 5th Ave. to look at the window display of Bergdorf"s,F.A.O.Schwarz,The Plaza and the fountain in front, all decked out,Tiffany windows,Trump Plaza,Cartier,go int St.Patrick's Cathedral, down the "Chanel"btw.the French and English Bdg.of the Rockefeller Ctr.to the ice rink and admire the tree there, the windows of Saks' and to the Holiday Market and the light show in Grand Central Station,
and then it's Christmas for me
Last year I went with guest to the holiday train show (the buildings made out of bark, pine cones, moss etc.the trains all vintage model trains, larger then normal, they had been made as toys for the railroad exec's children) in the Conservatory of the Botanical Garden.
Any-one else?
Oh and I forgot,
I love to craft,so I've made a slew of sea shell decorations for yet another tree,
3 days decorating, and 3 days to take them down LOL
That's what I have Flyingbabe, sea shell decorations along with other things too. Last year I made my husband go downstairs and get bags and bags of shells from the beach. The night before for some reason the tide washed in the most wondeful kind, and they never come in ..like ever! So he brought them up and we sat for hours making shell decorations for the tree. I did the tree in blue and white to resemble the beach as much as I could and the shells were perfect. I was going to try and not put a tree up this year at all, but I think I might go ahead and go for it. It can't be that bad.
Oh Babe... (sigh) there's nothing like a northern city Christmas. Us bumpkins make do with decorated palm trees, no snow though they do make fake snow at City Place, W. Palm Beach,
I'm torn this year between decorating for adults, you know golds and silvers, or dragging out my tacky snowmen and reindeer for the kids. My grandsons (ages 3 & 5) will be here and they looooove tacky. A girlfriend once said to me, "There's no such thing as tacky when it's Christmas!"
Oh,Diva, you will make the right decision when the time comes, and
Gina, now that you have all those wonderful decorations,do put them up,they sound lovely.
And you'll be singing:"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas",now you have a theme in your head.
I'm only too happy to return the favor :))))))
Gina, can we please see pictures of the shell decorations when the time comes?Pleeeeeze
