75 percent of the seed marketplace

" Societies and economies can be destroyed by bombs. Societies can also be destroyed by locking every aspect of life like provision of food and water through an economic war.”
By Vandana Shiva

"Dupont, Monsanto, Syngenta, and Groupe Limagrain control 75 percent of the seed marketplace. Currently, Monsanto and Dupont are going head to head for a bigger piece of the seed profit pie.

So what exactly does such dominance mean for our nation's food chain?

With four massive corporations controlling the marketplace, it undoubtedly will have repercussions for the food industry.

Farmers are essentially giving up the wheel to corporate entities that research, develop, and mass produce seeds.

Tracts of land planted with commercial seeds are pushing out local crop varieties and erasing the knowledge gained from 10,000 years of farming."

It is worth going to the blog and reading more. It is also a good idea to google Vandana Shiva and find out what else she is involved in.

Thanks for posting this. In the future, please everyone, cite the sources of information that you are not the author of and provide a link.

my daughters boyfriend has 2000 acres in northern nj. family farm actually. about 200 of it is in corn. their very own corn. im told this is not uncommon among farmers. they create their own breed and keep it going with their own seed. this is also true of tomatoes up here in jersey.

yes many farms are getting lazy and just buying large company seed. but many are not. its not all bad. the trick is to use our dollars to encourage the proper practices.

I purchase heirloom or open pollinated seeds from several sources and I am a seed-saver. I make sure that my veggies don't cross pollinate so that my seeds do not get tainted. This also insures that I keep non genetically modified seeds in the public domain. Perhaps at some point we can exchange seeds amongst one another.

i find it absurd, and annoying that most seeds in the catalogs, are hybrids. i have taken to keeping seeds as well. . and find they are better then the mother plant in most cases.
