Organizing gift wrapping supplies

Tubes of gift wrap are cumbersome and always find a way to cause a mess. If you don’t already have a designated storage system for your gift wrap, then you may want to consider putting one together or purchasing a pre-made system.

I use the Gift Wrap Organizer (pictured), which has served me well over the years. I hang it in my office closet and only pull it out when I use it. I purchased tape and scissors specifically to be stored with the gift wrap so that everything is in one spot when I need it.

I keep five tubes of wrapping paper in the storage sleeves: One roll of heavy, plain white (for wedding and anniversary gifts), two rolls of holiday paper (one with a snowman print and the other a solid gold), a conservative stripe (for father’s day and male birthdays), and a neutral with polka dots (for mother’s day, female birthdays, and baby showers). If I had children, I would probably have a sixth tube of printed, youthful paper. In the front pockets I have stored bows, ribbons, and clear scotch tape. The side pocket holds a pair of scissors. The top back pocket holds white, cream, pink, and blue tissue paper. Finally, the bottom back pocket holds 10 gift bags in varying sizes (most of these are recycled from gifts people gave to me).

Keep gift wrap from causing a mess in your home with a self-made or purchased organization system specifically designed for this purpose.

This is one of my problems!

After Christmas we hit the cheap wrapping sales and I have to keep it for a year. Then there are Wedding, Birthday and all the other special occasion wrappings and their accessories.

I use a large trash can for the paper but that does not help the bows etc.

I think I would need two or three of those!

If at least part of your basement is unfinished, screwing a few scrap pieces of lumber across the joists creates a nice place to store these in what is otherwise wasted space.

I don't have an unfinished basement but I put all Christmas wrapping supplies in a large tote plus wrap long rolls of wrapping paper together in trash bags held with rubber bands and keep it all together in one closet. When wrapping is finished for the year, I list what is needed and hit the after Christmas sales. I include sizzors, tape, tags, pens and saved bubble wrap in the tote plus unfolded - flat - gift boxes and gift bags. I also check Christmas cards and pick up what I think I'll need on sale and include those. I learned long ago to keep everything together so I don't have to frantically look for supplies or run out and get them when the time comes. I make it a rule to try to finish started rolls of paper before opening new ones.

I have another tote where I keep together all the things for Christmas gifts I pick up during the year.

I keep all the wrapping stuff in a plastic under the bed container. Works for me but sure not as neat as yours.

mercerquietman, I bet that would work above the sorting table or counter in a utility room. Double duty, when not sorting clothes we could use it for wrapping. Good project!

eecgeorgia, describe the tote. Is it like a large cloth bag or a piece of luggage?

Where is all this stored in the off season?

I have a spare bedroom and all Christmas goes on a set of shelves.

I really love your idea sandl . I use plastic bags now and even if I had to use 2 or more it would be more efficient than the bags. Thank you.

I don't do any wrapping anymore, but back in the day in NJ, I used two under-the-bed long flattish plastic containers. They are great for whatever size wrap you have. I also got smart, and starting buying wrap that came as folded packages, rather that on those long inconvenient tubes. And did as others here said... kept scissors, lots of tape, ribbon and bows with it all in one place.

If you don't have a lot of closet space, under the bed storage is more efficient than the hanging system because it is not taking up valuable closet space. In fact, you can store things under you sofa, and under lots of other furniture. Once in a while you have to haul it out and clean up the dust bunnies, then shove it back under again, but that leaves a lot of free closet space.

Some one PLEASE explain this after Christmas shopping spree to me......I just Do Not get it. Why would you buy wrapping paper, bows, fancy bags, rolls of scotch tape, and holiday cards 364 days before you need them? And horrors of all horrors...........store it in your home, stash it in a closet, hide it under your sofa AND spend more money on containers to store the original stuff (see list above).

And on top of spending time and money on this effort, you have to wage war against other shoppers to get there first.

I hate to say this but I have noticed a new trend in shopping techniques in the last few years. Take notice during this holiday season, especially right before Black Friday and Dec 26, how busy nail salons are. Notice anything different about the acrylic nails women get around these times. They are extra long and pointy. You could loose a hand just shopping for wrapping paper.

(I wore acrylic nails for years, I know of what I speak)

I keep ribbons in a tote box, with gift boxes and tags. The rolls of wrapping paper are standing upright, in a pretty wicker basked that is all that is left of a laundry hamper. It fits in the closet in the office, underneath shorter hanging clothes, and sits out, decoratively, during the holidays.

Not a problem. And no thank you, no crowds to fight for after holiday sales!!!

I have an idea where She Who Kicks keeps wrapping supplies, but it's not something I'd stake my life on. At the point I get a sense I'd better start wrapping those Christmas goodies I bought, I ask and stuff appears.

Three or four years ago, I happened upon what I thought was her Christmas wrapping stash, chose a lively looking paper and did all my wrapping early. Christmas morning I was informed I'd wrapped gifts in Barney birthday paper. I had to plead no contest to that one, and who the heck is Barney anyway? Besides, those presents were out in the open, for all to see and no one said anything to me about any funky purple dinosaurs.

My wife is extremely (!) organized, so were I to go looking I suspect the Christmas wrapping paper is now in one of those long boxes stacked neatly on the top shelf in Fred.
