Wind can really tear you down. Couple of years ago one reason I chose a 305 mile bike tour in ND was because it was so flat. I didn't know about the wind. First two days were bad, espcially the first day with 30 mph winds with gusts up to 40. Even the locals who were used to it were worn down physically and mentally.
Beware of those flatlands, kowboy!
"Farther north, strong high pressure combined with lower pressure from Ida is creating a strong pressure gradient resulting in gusty winds across eastern Florida down into the Keys and the Gulf of Mexico."
Aha! I was right in assuming Ida was effecting our weather and bringing these strong winds.
I know all about the winds SF....we have an occasional wind or two here in Oklahoma as well. It's like going uphill all the time...even while going downhill. Of course, we have hills here too...just to keep things on an even keel. I wanted to go out for a ride today, but the wind was about the same as yours and my employer decided I would have to work.....so I reluctantly gave up the bike ride...... yeah!
Breezy here too SF. Tomorrow is supposed to be moreso. Beware of Ida.
I always check the wind direction and speed before I head out for a ride. I make it a point to ride into the wind going. That way I have it at my back the whole way home. But if you're doing a specific ride, that isn't always possible.
Lets see, to ride into the wind on the way out would have meant riding two miles east and then hitting the Bay. Nope, not going to work. Yes, we do a specific ride down south of here to roads less traveled. It's the problem living in an urban area, trying to avoid traffic. If and when I locate to Central FL, then there will be more choice of routes--and hills!
Riding in strong gusters are always a challenge. I just have to hunker down and pray that I don't get blown off the bike. BTW, what do you do to stabilize the bike while riding in those strong winds?
I do the same, hunker down and pray. I've been in winds strong enough that I've felt the bike move. If you're aware that it could happen, then it's less likely to take you by surprise and take you and other riders down.
My motto for wind: the three "D's"..............drop down, slow down, and gear down
