Leadership.....

This is a question for all the veterans here and also everyone else.....

For the veterans and any active that may be here:

Of the current/last 12 Presidents, who would you follow into battle without question and why?

Some may wonder at the question, but those who have been in harms way (wartime or peacetime) will understand this question.....

For those who wonder.....if one is in harms way (wartime or peacetime) one depends on leadership from those in charge, or if one is in charge then must display leadership.....

Leadership is not perfect, but must be present or the battle is over. Period.

Now those here with a military background may well have different views and that is certainly acceptable.....each of us will vigorously defend each other's right to agree or disagree.....we swore that.....

So the question here is.....do we have true leadership from the WH now? If not, why not? And what needs to happen to attain true leadership, if it does not currently exist?

And for those who have not served in the active/reserve/guard then do NOT hesitate to contribute; rather contribute, ask questions, ask the hard why questions.....that is how we grow.....

Let's get real, it will be highly suggesive to say the least.....I do not mean it so; I want to have a discussion on leadership, not politics specifically.....

Eisenhower, the last leader who truly understood what war is, None of the Presidents since have truly shown that they do. Eisenhower also understood the danger of the military industrial complex.

Eisenhower, for the reasons mshadow gave, as well as for having the foresight to know that the Holocaust would one day be denied. He is responsible for the vast number of film and photos taken at the camps.

Eisenhower for the same reasons stated above. Carter was President when I was in the Air Force, I truly believe he would not sent troops into war without a lot of thought and with a clear purpose. Although I half wish we had made Iran a parking lot, but for all those shady deals in the 1950s we probably would have.

I think it was better back in the days that the "leader" went into battle at the head of his men. Maybe more presidents would think twice before embroiling their country in war.

I was in the Marine Corps from 1968 to 1974. I was honored to be chosen to be on a panel at the time at Headquarter Marine Corps where issues of the day from race relations to sick bay appointments were put under discussion with a variety of officers and enlisted personal. The panel was headed by the then Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. The discussions were transcribed, read and often acted upon by the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

The Sergeant Major was a very intelligent man. During one of the discussions he said something that I clearly remember to this day. He said, “The most undemocratic part of our democratic society is the military, and THAT’S the way it HAS to be.” From Turman to Obama (being the last 12 including current) the very top of the chain-of-command is the President of the United States. Therefore despite any ones politics, leadership skills, resume or lack of any of these, I (and I would suggest all other Marines) would follow ALL of them into battle without question. As the Sergeant Major said, “THAT’S the way it HAS to be!”

PJ: We were far more afraid of our Sgt Major then we were of the NVA...

But, if you had a real problem, it would be quickly fixed, and we would have followed him to the very gates of Hell.

Mac was a Prima Dona of the first grade…But yes he stuck to his guns…

Can I go, all the way back to Grant? That was a general, not so good as a president, sadly to say…
