Conway rest stop honored

I saw in the "Midwest Traveler" Magazine put out by AAA that the newly redone rest stop/welcome center at Conway [between Lebanon and Springfield] has been honored for its design and eco-friendly features.

The entire article along with a few pictures can be accessed by clicking on the link below, choosing MIDWEST Traveler and then midway down on the right side In The News. [ view link ]

I remember you telling about that before. This is so very appropriate for this part of MO. There is a Route 66 museum in Lebanon, MO. Many things reacting to Route 66 in Springfield. My son lives near Conway, we will stop at the rest stop next time we go there.

Will have to visit is some day. I rarely that the route from Springfield to Lebanon. I generally stop at one or two going from here to Oklahoma City. Missouri has some nice ones. There is a new one just this side of the state line (Missouri Rest Stop) that is very nice.

Yes, WB, I did post a message about it before, because I was so taken with the decor and the wind thing to power the lights and all.
They are slowly redoing all of them, I guess. The Conway one was closed for the longest time, and now that it is open, the one just west of Rolla is down.

Interesting article! Finished a month ahead of time and $3 million under budget---that is great. I would love to in Missouri on Route 66 and see everything they have to see. I saw an article on it once in a magazine but can't remember the name. This is a neat online magazine and have put it in my favorite. Sure wish I had more money to do more travelling. That is one thing I miss in my retirement.

A few weeks or months ago, somebody was criticizing the road maintenance, repairs in MO. May have been in a magazine I receive. In my opinion (who cares but I can still state it). MODOT has done an outstanding job on repairs, interchange redos, etc. I have never seen so many jobs completed ON TIME and many under budget as I have observed in the state of Missouri.

Truly, I am proud to call "MISSOURI" my home.

We stopped at the Conway rest stop today. My goodness, that is the neatest place. Every little detail was so well thought out. Bruce walked all around to see the different Route 66 businesses, which were actually covering the picnic tables. I wonder if that neon stop lights up at night, the one in front that looks like an old motel sign.

MODOT did GOOD! I have often complained that MO had some of the worst rest stops of all the different areas we travel. I can now say this one is one of the best.

ozarkreader:Do you have any idea what the rest stop near Rolla will be like?

@WB: No clue, can't even get close. Traffic is two way on the east-bound lanes there, no time for sightseeing!

BTW, my son told me - don't know if this is true - that the rest stops in MO are privately owned. This make sense to any of you?

I don't believe that the Missouri rest stops are privately owned! If any of them have added commercial facilities, I bet they lease the space. I have seen such rest areas in Kansas on the turnpike, but didn't know Missouri had any. I do travel Hwy 70 and 44, but haven't seen anything that looked like private property in a rest area yet. Let us know if you learn otherwise.

Many nationwide highways were built around the same time, and they have all started to fall apart at the same time., especially the bridges It would be a miracle for them all to be in good repair. We don't jump in and vote monies to pay for roads until they are really bad. I think the states do a good job with the funds available. This is one place where we could add jobs and help the economy. Missouri depends on tourist dollars is a big way. Without good roads, we would loose revenue. It is a vicious cycle....

The last few years, I have seen a lot of bridge repair work on state highways and even some of the county roads. I have been impressed the the fact they these jobs have been completed on or before schedule.

That's true, they do, and whiole I complain about construction zones sometimes, the truth is they are better managed in MO than in some other states I've been in
