Poor baby. What about a pain shot if she won't take the pills? She looks miserable but is, no doubt, happy to be home.
I may have to resort to that, but by the time I make the 45 minute drive I could have given her the pills and she would be more comfortable. I can pill her when necessary but it is very unpleasant for her. This vet visit has really stressed her. One of the reasons we waited to do surgery is she is not a good candidate for anesthesia, but we really had no choice. BTW, she looks like that when she IS comfortable, too! lol
You can see the surgical scar on her head from her surgery in June.
What a sad looking baby. My Miley had mammary tumors and the rest of her teeth pulled about 2 months ago. The anesthesia knocks them for a loop and she'll be fine. We have one Pap girl who sometimes doesn't like to take her tons of meds. Sometimes I have to resort into putting them into a syringe looking thing..no needle of course but there is a wider opening at the bottom with a stopped. I put the pills in there and let water melt them. I just push the cocktail in her mouth with the plunger. Not her favorite thing but she doesn't fight me, and I know she has her meds.
I may dissolve her pills in water and give by syringe, too. That way I don't have to force her mouth open very wide. She screams when I have to forced feed pills. Zoie has a lot of arthritis and its in her neck too, but she may also have a pinched nerve or something. A few years ago, she took a dive off the porch and I do mean dive. I don't know how she did not break her neck the way she landed, with her neck twisted backwards under her. Nearly scared me to death. Bassets do not jump well, especially old Bassets!
The prednisone does help with her arthritis. She is on a low dose daily. I crush it and mix it in her morning food of chicken and rice.
Does she seem any better today?
My hugs to Zoie and I hope she is feeling better soon..
Poor Zoie! I'm so glad it wasn't cancer, but my heart goes out to her and you. She looks like such a sweetheart! I hope she feels better soon.
Oh, Zoie does look a bit under the weather. How old is she? I am glad to hear that the mass wasn't cancerous. I prefer to give pills to my dogs, but either wrap braunschweiger around them or put them in a pill-pocket (by Greenies). Both have such a strong smell that my dogs can't smell the pills. Also, when you give them wrapped, have another piece without pill in your other hand and hold it in front of their nose as soon as you got the first one in. Most of them will swallow the first one quickly, to get the next! I hope that works for Zoie. Seadreamer54 is right, she looks so cute, I just want to run and give her a hug.
I gave her the pills dissolved in water and a syringe. She's not eating much yet, only a few bites, but it was a long incision so I quess she still hurts too much. Zoie is 12 years 8 months. She wieghs in at 61 lbs, if she loses a pound or two it won't hurt her. I just don't want her to get down to 53 lbs she was in June. That was too skinny.
Salami is also a strong smelling disguise for pills. You can slice a pocket and shove the pill inside. And I've done the same thing that sigrid4neel suggested. Have another in the other hand to distract her and not give her a chance to thing about the strange taste in the medicated bite. Good luck. I'm glad all turned out well. I know that older dogs have a hard time bouncing back after surgery.
