A feel-good story

Immediately after WW2, my mother decided for reasons of her own to try her luck in Greenville, SC. She was an artist, and got along well with other artsy types, one of those in Greenville being a Mr. McLane. Earlier in his career, he'd worked on Broadway, acting, producing or whatever. There in Greenville, he was teaching at the local high school (?), so it was only natural he also be given responsibility for the little theater productions.

At one point, the city fathers dug deep into their pockets and came up with enough change to put on a play that would do the city proud. Not sure which play that was, but Mr. McLane particularly wanted two young ladies to audition for a choice part, mother and Joanne Woodward.

Mother didn't show up for the audition, Joanne did.

Years later, Joanne returned to Greenville, and the city planned a parade in her honor.

Mother said it rained that day.
