Do You Remember Armistice Day?

And if so, what do you recall doing about it? The original Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of World War I on 11 November 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Rethondes, France at precisely 11 o'clock when all armed hostilities in the trenches would cease and Europe would once more be at peace. The day has since morphed into Veteran's Day and honors all American fighting forces in every war before or since which is as it should be. But for some of us who can recall taps being played in military cemeteries all across the country at exactly 11 am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, there remains a poignant memory of those who gave it all in "The war to end all war"

Through all my 12 years of school it was called Armistice Day, we changed it to Veterans Day in 1954. I just remember it as being a very solemn day, lots of flags, parades.... photos of the thousands of white grave markers in Arlington National Cemetery.

Unfortunately, my guess is warring between peoples will never end. There will always be threats, real or not, against the security of our nation.... to which our people answer with bombs and bullets.

Yes, wars have been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Most likely, everyone in "this group" remembers Armistice Day. I do believe it is fitting to honor all of our military. The schools have great programs doing this. My husband was a Korean "police action? Veteran. Our church ALWAYS honors Veterans on the Sunday before Veterans Day. I am glad it was not included in the "Monday Holiday" thing. If things go as planned, I will get to see Arlington next spring.

As for our current Veterans, Some restaurants are offering free meals to a Veteran, so worth checking and watching the commercials.

I too remembered the former name and will not forget whatever it should be name. There's a name on the Vietnam wall will forever keep my mind on Veterans. Novemeber 11th, hopefully, will remained as, A Day to remembered our Veterans. Those who have served. Remebered our troops who are still serving and their families!

I still call it Armistice Day, and if a youngling asks, I tell them about the "War to End all Wars" -- how ironic the name....
