On being informed

On how many occasions have you started a conversation with someone and before you even finished the sentence they took the ball and ran in the complete opposite direction with it. Why is it that the least informed are always the ones who do the most talking? Remember that old phrase "Look before you leap" or as my country-bred Mom used to say "It's the emptiest wagon that makes the most noise!"
Have you experienced this when no matter what you try to say you know someone who never is on the same sheet of music with you? I had ot just turn and walk away in the middle of the conversation I was tryingto have yesterday.

I don't have this happen very often, but it when it does happen, I say, "What I was GOING to say was....." and ask them to please listen until I'm finished. If they can't do that, then I, too, will walk away.

Sometimes walking away is all anyone can do. To learn if one is on the same page sometimes requires one to nibble around the edges to see if there's a thin spot in the membrane that holds them in. If puss and infection oozes forth....run.

I've done it, and I've had it done to me. In my case I'm so bent on trying to make a point, I sometimes get off point in order to make the point. My wife says it's because I think everyone else is not as smart, or that I think I have to explain everything like I'm talking to a child. Perhaps she has a point?

I don't know where I heard it, probably in an old movie or a Robert Fulmer book or something but the old saying "It's more important to be kind than it is to be right" sticks with me, especially when I'm trying to talk to someone who deserves to be hit with a sledge.

Yes some folks do act like that when they are talking at you. But I'm just talking ordinary conversation not debating an issue or trying to make a point. I am probably the world's worst debater in that I try to avoid them because to me debates are nothing more than intellectual arguing and I'm about peaceful resolutions. That's why I walk away.

Lady, a perfect example of your question is how people respond to posts presented in various groups on this site. A person can ask a relatively simple question and then someone takes it, twists it like a pretzel and then you have a totally different scenario.

The least informed who usually do most of the talking? Because they're too ignorant to know any better.

When I find myself in a situation such as you describe, I try to restate my position as clearly as possible. If they STILL don't get it, I often shut the door (figuratively speaking) and move on.

It happens.....then take a 2x4 and whack the person up side the head (figuratively speaking - NOT literally).....and then correct them.....

Now, most folks can work with simple correction, but some may need the 2x4.....

GlamDiva57: As always, you seem to sum it up pretty well. I see all the time on posts here on Eons, not so much in this group but in other groups I've belonged to. These are the kinds of groups I don't care to participate in anymore.

Let me just offer this observation, some may agree and some may not but here goes. For myself, I feel guilty because I am no where near as informed as I should be. This covers many subjects across the board. I feel guilty because we live in the "information age". I also feel guilty because at my age I should probably know a lot more than I do. There is so much information out there on just about any subject that there is no real reason for anyone not to be informed other than lack of interest of just laziness. I admit this myself.

However, I feel like a lot of people do like to "shoot their mouths off" and not necessarily answer the question being asked or the conversation at hand. They want to show how smart they are and what they know or in some cases do not know.

There is an old saying "I would rather stay quiet and be considered ignorant, rather than open my mouth and remove all doubt".
