The Cherokees are also important in Texas history because they took over the leadership role of the Indian tribes of East Texas from the Caddo. They became the dominant Indian tribe in East Texas.

Music,

you may add our tribe to your list of TX AmerIndians: TSALAGIYI NVDAGI NATION.

we've been in TX since 1818 & are "one of the flavors" of AmerIndians that outsiders call "Cherokees". we no longer speak the same dialect as the other "Cherokees", because we have been separated from the other "Cherokees" for so long.
(Cherokee, btw, is a Choctaw word that means: those who dwell in caves.)

our ancestors came to New Spain to escape the fury of the US Army & the GA Pony Clubs & to seek freedom of religion.
(about 800 families made "The Long Walk" to what is now TX. the Royal Governor of New Spain gave land to the refugees from GA - he was pleased to have 800 families of good/peaceful farmers to settle up in the far northeastern area of his jurisdiction.)

our "tribal seat" (our administrative headquarters & chief's home) is in Troup, TX - we do not have a reservation & never have had. instead we have "towns".
(loosely affiliated groups of families - all of the families farmed & raised livestock in "the early days" in TX & most still farm today in Smith,Cherokee,Panola,Gregg, Rusk,Henderson, Nacogdoches & Shelby counties.).

interestingly enough, we have about as many "enrolled members" in northern Mexico as we do in Texas.
(nobody in TX or Mexico asked us where the international boundry should be drawn after the Texas Revolution.===> CHUCKLE.)

we also have some families resident in LA (near Shreveport) & a few other families/towns in AL,GA,MS & TN.

the nation is governed by an Principal Chief, several Vice-Chiefs,the Tribal Council, Town Chiefs & Town Councils, who are elected by the enrolled adult membership of the nation.

yours, Otter
