I think he hit his head, fell, landed in the water, and drowned. He would have lived, probably, if he had not landed in the pool.

What a terrible story! MQM, don't do it, or at least get some help!

Merc - you need to wear some "grippy" shoes and have a mountain climbers belt on. A helmet with a thick, protective lining is a good idea. Also, make sure you lay some mattresses end to end around area where you will be working, close enough to the foundation of your home so that it breaks your fall should the shoes and belt fail to work! And always have a spotter! Personal experience urges me to warn you not to use a next door neighbor, as a law suit always seems to follow.

Don't laugh at me please, but this is true -- I climbed up on the garage roof many years ago - got stuck, was afraid to jump off, couldn't find the top of the ladder, finally worked my way off the rather low roof. Several years later, I see a neighbor stuck on his roof, his wife was in the front yard by the ladder giving him hell for not being able to "back down" onto the ladder. I climbed the ladder and guided his feet to the top, and then he was okay -- I know exactly how he felt. Several years after that, my son and I climbed onto the roof of my one story house, I couldn't find the top of the ladder - my son thought it was pretty darn funny, I didn't! Finally, I got up enough nerve to back off the roof onto the too short ladder. You'd think I'd learn!!!!

Solution #1 - don't go on roofs.

Solution #2 - use a long enough ladder so it will lean against the edge of the roof.

Why do guys love to climb on the roof? I have two sons and both of them are more than happy to get out the ladder and climb on the roof to get something down. Of course they are the person who threw something up there in the first place.

I have no desire to get up on the roof and Mike's story would be me if I attempted to get up there.

Why do men climb on the roof?

Answer -- Because it's there!

Why else?
