I believe when we dropped the draft/lottery system of requiring service we lessened the number of individuals available to the military. Therefore multiple tours have become the norm.
The other issue beingthe draft/lottery as it pertains to individual's concerns about the war. If there is a potential for my congresssperson's son being drafted their decision to support/fund the war may be affected. Same goes for us as parents.
Thank God they dropped the draft, I would have gone to Nam in the last lottery but I was still in High School!
Crawlin... You're just a kid!!
I heard on NPR that this guy's performance evals showed that he was lazy and showed up late all the time. Once he gave a talk at a conference where the speakers discussed mental health related topics but he talked all about his beliefs and how the Koran talks about cutting the heads off of nonbelievers. According to one guy, after this speech people joked that one day he'd lose it and shoot people!

the whole thing makes me weak in the knees. i just don't understand why people have to hurt other people when they don't like how things are. didn't this "let's kill a bunch of people, because I'm unhappy," begin with Columbine? what's the history of this?
I had lunch with a friend today. She has traveled the world to help others. An extremely Christian person. She was telling me that the name Malik has something to do with evil. At least that is what I got from what she was telling me.
Why was there not more profiling done on this guy. Another slips through the cracks or are we just not using our heads. In time these persons will out number us - we will not be the norm. I am glad I will not be here for that, but I fear for our children and grandchildren. These are all little baby steps they are taking. Then living in the good old USA. Then what?
58,000 troops were killed in Vietnam
3,476 US troops were killed in Iraq
Both numbers are horrible but while Vietnam it was more battles and fewer IEDs, in Iraq it is more IEDs and less battles.
Not a lot of "front lines" in Iraq. Kind of equal opportunity danger, while in Vietnam it was mostly the Infantry and forward units who were killed in action or wounded.
Thank God for Police Officer Kimberly Munley. Her actions likely saved more lives and more injuries. That took incredible skill and bravery on her part. She and all victims are in my prayers.
Wisconsin families took a hard hit, 2 killed 6 injured. Indeed, they have our prayers.

I will wait for the facts to be sorted out on this one. One can't make judgements on the basis of a name or religion. Remember Timothy McVeigh. If we directed our hostilities on those things we would have had to declare the Irish as terrorists and invade Ireland. And because McVeigh had close ties to Christian Identity groups we would have to be suspicious of the Christians.
In Latin Malus means bad or evil and is the root of the english Malevalent, Malcontent, etc.. However, arabic is not based on latin so I can't say what if anything it means in a name in any language.
Christians are most familiar with this from the old latin prayers and "deliver us from evil" as in "libera nos a Malo" in The Lord's Prayer, Our Father, Poster Noster.
I did a quick check on the meaning of malik in arabic and it came up as "king" in one form.
That is the end of this morning's language lecture. "Vade in Pace."
