The Shooter At Fort Hood

How strange to learn that the shooter at Ft.Hood was a psychiatrist. No one is immune from stress and pressure, from a collapsing inner structure.

I am sure there is a long story that goes along with all of this. Whether we not of the inner circle will ever know it remains to be seen.

It was pure Islamic Terrorism... The reports are that he was screaming "Allah Akbar" as he was murdering Americans.

Terrorism.

I am not surprised to learn that that the shooter was a psychiatrist - most of them are nuttier than their patients.

Converts to any religion are always more zealous than those born into one.

FlyWacko I agree with you; it has been reported that people who were in the room when this guy was shooting said he shouted “Allah Akbar” during his rampage. Former classmates who were with him in medical school said he often spoke out about how the War on Terror was a war against Islam, and his relatives have said that he was upset because he could not find a Muslim woman who practiced Islam according to his values.

It was also reported that he was ostracized by other soldiers for being a Muslim but also that he was aggressive in imposing his faith on other soldiers. I think as time goes on this shooter will unfortunately be seen as just another home grown Islamic terrorist.

Unfortunately I think its going to get worst before it gets better; there are Americans who sympathize with Al Qaeda or the values of Islamic Jihad against American infidels, and many of them are in the military. These American Jihad sympathizers make Jane Fonda during the Vietnam War look like a foolish schoolgirl. This is one nut that mental health intervention is most likely not going to crack as this is the remnants of a feud that has been going on for thousands of years.

As more information comes out it appears that the Army missed some major cues when it came to this shooter. Apparently his classmates and students (he was an instructor) expressed concern and alarm about the things Hasan was saying and teaching. But, as one doctor said there is a shortage of military psychiatrists and the government spend 6 years of tax dollars educating this guy. They wanted a return on their investment in terms of service and therefore chose to overlook the warning signs. Hasan himself made it clear that he could not cope with the prospect of being sent to Afghanistan. When someone says they "can't cope" - they should be listened to no matter what profession they are in. Leaving a person without options can have very grave consequences as it did in this case.

American Muslims are concerned about a backlash because the shooter at Ft. Hood is a Muslim who shouted, according to reports, “Allah Akbar” which loosely translated means “God is great,” while he went on a rampage shooting American soldiers. There are also reports that one or more of the soldiers he counseled as a psychiatrist committed suicide. It does beg the question that as a psychiatrist what kind of counseling was he doing if his loyalties were elsewhere? Can you offer effective counseling to a person who has participated in a war when you may consider their participation to be criminal?

Can you offer effective counseling to a person who has participated in a war when you may consider their participation to be criminal? Yes. Consider the Viet Nam war and its damaged veterans. Not every counselor felt the war was just, but were still able to effective treat its participants.

It would appear that there is enough blame to go around with this tragedy. However, I personally feel the Army should have taken the responsibility of removing this doctor from the mainstream. They were already investigating him for behavior they felt was suspect. The shooter was more than willing to repay the government for his education in order to be relieved of his duty. But, instead one of the higher ups chose to send him to the very place he was deeply conflicted about both personally and as a psychiatrist. There were a lot of factors in this situation that led up to creating this "perfect storm".
