Thank you Crindaguitar and Mary. I looked in my "Birdbook" and I find the Egret is slightly smaller and has black legs. They can't be seen well here but, the legs of the larger Heron are yellow to yellow-green. Perhaps bugman can shed some light on the difference, if there is one?
Wow thats quite a site CD ,we just started getting them up here in Mich not too long ago but I'v never seen more than 4 of them at a time.
To bring this full circle, my bird book says they are all white herons. I remember having been puzzled by the black legs, yellow legs, greenish etc. great, cattle, little etc. Most of mine have black legs. The one thing I am very pleased with is that no one called them cranes, which lots of people do. They are still better pics than any I have. Grrr...
REALDOUG: I usually see only one. We came upon this rookerie as we rounded a bend in the river. It was a total surprise for us as well as the birds.
MaryS: Thank you for the additional information. I have proven I am no expert on birds. BTW I have seen your wonderful photos and you have nothing to grrr about. lol.
