Games

Do any of you remember childhood games, I for one remember playing knock down ginger . We would creep up the garden path knock the knocker then run like the wind other wise if we got caught we would end up with a swift clip round the ear.

Good old fashioned games that fetched whole family together, unlike computor games of today.

Oh yes, snakes and ladders. I also remember Ludo but would not have a clue now how its played.
Blow football?......................now my Dad told stories of "Knock up Ginger" he and his brothers. They would go down the village and the row houses were one of their favorite places because they could tie the doornobs together. Knock on both doors and watch the two neighbours fighting each other to open the door. They had to be terrors from what he has told me of things they did. Thing was back then the village police man would grab them by the ear and march them home to dad who would give them a good whuppin. Now a days its juvie for the wayward lads. The village bobby was not opposed to a good smack on the ear himself either if it was appropriate.
We also spent a lot of time rummaging through the hedgerows for old pram wheels and making our own "chariots" and racing them down the hills. The making of the project was the main source of entertainment though and practicing with it.

Its like Chutes and Ladders Seadreamer, just a different name and its snakes you slide down instead of the chutes like over here...a board game.

We also played hide and seek and hopscotch and red rover, cowboys and indians, jump rope etc....we spent alot of time outside. Rarely indoors unless it rained...then it was stare forlornly out the windows wishing the rain would stop.

One we played was 'What's the time Mr Wolf'. We also played with a whip and top. Then there were mud slingers where we would get a long stick and get a big blob of mud on the end of it and fling it as far as we could get it to go.
During the summer we would put our tent up in the back garden and camp out for days with our friends in there as well.
We played card games in the house as a family. My Brother and I would make dens in the living room out of chairs and blankets.
I remember my Brother getting a chemistry set for Christmas one year and it had a bunsen burner. I don't know what we concocted but it hit the ceiling and for years couldn't be painted over as it would always show through.

I doubt that kids games changed much through the years until the electronic age hit us......we too played Mother May I...........and I do remember playing a made up game of "Champion the Wonder Horse" using our scarves as horses tails in our coat belts. Girls love horses and Champion was the best, and Flicka.
I can still hear the song that went with the show. At school in winter we would make slides of ice. So all the kids lined up and slid on the patch of ice.........would get slicker and slicker the more kids that joined in. I remember falling on my face one time and getting a big lump on my head. They had to take me to my mum who was at work. Some lady put a copper penny on my "egg" .........

haha Owly1 I bet that was fun, that chemistry set. Can you imagine having a Bunson burner in a kids toy these days....oh horrors. Yes I remember "Whats the time mr Wolf" forgot about that one.
We had a den too...........my dads garden was off limits but my friend down the road had an unkept garden and we had fun there. We dug a big hole and put sheets of corrugated iron over it and spent a lot of time just sitting down there with candles feeling really cool. His house backed onto an embankment and we could hide out under and through all the bushes that grew on the banks.......people unsuspecting would walk along the footpath not knowing a bunch of little horrors were hanging out in the bushes above................hehehe......we had secret paths on both sides of the roads enbankments and could not be seen from the road or footpaths. It was really cool.
