Health, Longevity and Universal Health Care

I know that the health reform issues have been debated endlessly here on eons and elsewhere as well.

I have read that even though we supposedly have the best health care system in the world, we are only number 31 in life expectancy and number 37 in infant mortality.

I have read some who blame those statistics on Medicaid, the government health program for low- or no- income Americans, claiming that the poor statistics do not reflect on private insurance or private health care.

I have read that people travel from all over the world to get access to the health care here rather than what they have in their own countries.

I have read that if the government institutes its own universal health care coverage, we will be at the mercy of faceless bureaucrats who will make medical decisions about what medical care we will receive, decisions that should be made by health care personnel.

I have now read Nicholas Kristof's op-ed piece in the New York Times that addresses all those issues and more. You can read for yourself about those issues here: view link

Rant following: Some of the premises in your message are just off and wrong. America does not have the best healthcare system in the world. Our healthcare system is a random system based upon profit, division into specialities and warped by government and insurance company costs, regulations and requirements. Because of this complexity most healthcare decisions made in this country today are only approved after approval from an unqualified insurance representative is obtained. Think about how ridiculous that is. This situation has been created by the insurance companies lobbying and worming their way into Congress and the law. At this time the best economies and health care systems in the world are located in Nordic countries in northern Europe. Both quality of life and life longevity are located in these countries. You are right about America ranking down in the thirties for both life issues. The number of people in our country today with serious health issues and no healthcare is staggering. And that situation is getting worse as unemployment continues to rise. The official unemployment rate today is 10.2%. That is the highest unemployment rate since the early 1980s and that is only the number the government will admit to.

I grew up in America believing that our country would provide the basics of life to every citizen. Now the country seems to be populated mostly by greedy people who don't want anything to really change as long as they have theirs. I was so naive.

The promise of America is about as solid as the treaties to the Native Americans.

Health care hasn't passed yet because of extremists like the tea partiers and you,z. Scaring representatives into thinking they are the majority just because they're the loudest and venom spewing.

The beauty of our system is that nobody can just 'decree' a change in law or policy. It is also one of the problems in our media hype age where issues are manufactured and opinion passed off as fact. The lowest common denominator ends up sabotaging any change for the good.

That's why the dumbing down, and dying off of basic civility, the cynicism that refulses to accept altruism as human trait is scary to some of us. i don't really believe America is totally alone in this tho.
There times i think 'Life after people' might fare better than with us.

zdonz is a troll who has hijacked this thread for his own amusement.

An examination of the campaign contributions being made to the elected representatives that are fighting health care reform will show that their loyalty is to the major corporations that are funding their re-election war chests. The Republicans have made it clear that they don't care what form health care legislation takes, they will vote no. Grassley pretended to work with Baucus in a bipartisan effort to draw up a bill that would satisfy enough Republican "concerns" to pass the bill. As soon as Congress adjourned for the summer, Grassley went home and told his constituents he would never vote for any health care reform bill.

The article I cited showed the flaws in the arguments being made by the Teapotters and the health insurance company shills.

In almost any comparison drawn between the US and other countries, our citizenry is less healthy and lives shorter life spans. That changes, according to Kristof's article, once US citizens reach 65. At that point they are eligible for GOVERNMENT RUN UNIVERSAL health care. After the age of 65, we are right up at the top of the charts in comparison with other countries in terms of health and longevity.

AARP and the AMA are now backing the HOUSE bill. The AMA is supporting this bill as long as the House also passes the necessary legislation that sets aside the impending cuts in Medicare reimbursement rates.

Lord.. have mercy on him. The President I mean. Keep he and his innocent family safe, help him to try to make the right decisions to satisfy all Americans. Let the hatred aimed at him not deter his trying to make it right for the country he loves and keep him safe from angry lynch mobs who would like nothing better than to put a bullet in his head merely because of the color of his skin, a color which You and only You created. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I think that unless you have lived with NHS you should not criticize it. I have lived with it and find it far far superior than anything here. Even now at its worst, the health care in Britain is far superior to this country.
