Health, Longevity and Universal Health Care

I know that the health reform issues have been debated endlessly here on eons and elsewhere as well.

I have read that even though we supposedly have the best health care system in the world, we are only number 31 in life expectancy and number 37 in infant mortality.

I have read some who blame those statistics on Medicaid, the government health program for low- or no- income Americans, claiming that the poor statistics do not reflect on private insurance or private health care.

I have read that people travel from all over the world to get access to the health care here rather than what they have in their own countries.

I have read that if the government institutes its own universal health care coverage, we will be at the mercy of faceless bureaucrats who will make medical decisions about what medical care we will receive, decisions that should be made by health care personnel.

I have now read Nicholas Kristof's op-ed piece in the New York Times that addresses all those issues and more. You can read for yourself about those issues here: view link

No matter what the pros and cons any editorialist who has health coverage his or herself says, when one has no access at all to routine health care -- has to get sick enough to go to the emergency room, or die, as 0ver 40,000 Americans a year do --it is a disgrace! The only developed nation in the world that does not make access to health care available for all its citizens.

No, we are 37th in the world for the general health of our population. For people who develop diseases that go to crisis or their death for lack of funds to see a doctor. Part of our 'mortality' is American citizens who die who should not have.

I know what the issues are. For I am one of the many who never had access to employer paid programs. I had to shop for insurance myself, be faced with outrageous premiums and a long list of conditions they would not cover. As a self employed person most of my life, I know firsthand what it is like dealing with insurance companies and facing premiums that equal a house payment -- for crappy coverage and $5,000 to $10,000 a year deductibles.

We pay more per capital by half than any nation in the world -- and have atrocius disease and mortality rates for conditions that never should have developed -- had the person access to routine health care; diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other conditions that could have been detected on early check up -- that went to crisis or death.

it is a complex issue, and, we, as americans, need to revise our diets, take much better care of ourselves, change our lifestyles dramatically, but, i am for universal healthcare. i want it done well of course, and, i want all the other issues addressed also, but, as one who had a pharmacy for 35 years, saw so many sad stories. no doubt. there are so many americans that work so hard, try so hard, and have no coverage. so many sad stories. should not happen in this country, or any wealthy country. police protection, roads, education - how is it that health care has been categorized so differently, as an option!? not to elaborate and write a book, but, from my experiences , a myriad of them, i also have to be specific, and say insurance companies should be extinct and not involved in healthcare !

I, myself, have lived under a national health care system in England and I am for something like that here in America. I want health care for all people in our country. No exceptions.....I pay $500 for my health insurance...and every year it goes up..this is insane.

Where'd ya get 83% zdonz? Choosing health insurance is like choosing the axe that'll chop off your own head. The first sweeping statement you made is blatantly false (you work for an insurance company? just wonderin....)

Tell that to the 44,000 who died last year for lack of health care. Oh, they are dead. To have the government payer doesn't make it 'socialist'. If one is going to use a term they ought to look it up for the definition, first.

Medicare is socialist? Then, damn it, don't participate. Buy one's own insurance at age 65. I double dog dare ya.
