Prayers for those at Fort Hood

This afternoon there was an attack on Fort Hood. 7 have been killed and 30 wounded in the mass shooting. The wounded have been taken to a hospital and it is reported that they are all military personnel. The situation is unfolding as I write this. Please join me in prayer for the soldiers at Fort Hood and their families.

PRAYER FOR THE SAFETY OF SOLDIERS

Almighty and eternal God,
those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy.
Protect all soldiers, particularly those at Fort Hood in Texas
today as they were attacked.
Protect them with the shield of your strength
and keep them safe from all evil and harm.
May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety,
that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO AWAIT A SOLDIER'S RETURN

God of all goodness,
Look with love on those who wait for news about the safety of their loved ones
who serve in the armed forces of their country
and in particular, who serve at Fort Hood in Texas today.
In faith and hope, we turn to you for comfort.
Grant that we may trust in your mercy
and send an angel to sustain us
as we await word of their safety.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

This is a terrible tragedy - the number dead has risen to 12 (4:54 pm, Thursday). There are two suspects in custody. The base is still on lock down. 31 wounded. They say the shooter was a U.S. soldier and two other soldiers have been apprehended. There is question whether this may happen in other places as well - at other military bases around the world.
