Hole in the wall

Its the size of a door knob. The stopper was no longer in place and the door was slam against the wall. I am not sure but do I put newspaper in the hole and then put seam tape over it then spackle?

Is that the right way to fix it?

An easier way is to just fill the hole with plaster not quite all the way, leaving a slight indentation. When it dries, lightly sand it and then apply a thin coat of spackle to make it even with the wall. The doorknob hole is pretty small and doesn't need the support of the screen or the tape for that matter.

OK turbo if I use plaster first... will that not crack like large amounts of spackle does?

Yes, that is why you do it in two steps. Fill the hole up not quite all the way and let it dry completely and even crack if it is thick. BTW you could use spackle for the whole job. Not filling it all the way allows for the thin layer of spackle to be applied. Don't forget to sand between steps.
