Husband with Diabetes

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes recently and we make do. It can be hard sometimes but we manage together. When he came back from the doctor he didn't know the specifics so I looked on Google to try to find places with information so I could learn more about diabetes to help him stay healthy. I found a couple places with information. One of the places I found was good at giving the medical specifics of diabetes and giving general tips. If you want to look at it I can post a link.

I hope that helps some of you. Please share more links if you know of good sources for more information. I want to know as much as possible to help my husband.
Stay strong!

His doctor should send him to a clinic like i was sent to at the local hospital, with a nurse and a dietician, even then it is confusing, but he needs to go and maybe you with him to help understand... would hope you can get that..

ADA for sure, and a dietitian, usually at the hospital. Can not believe a doctor would tell you something like this and not give you some direction/help. What about checking your BS, or A1C?

Go find your local ADA and spend some quality time with them.

Thank you so much. You've all been so helpful for us. We've been looking into many options and are starting to manage okay.

Go back to the doctor and demand a referal to a diabetes lessons classes. They are covered by most insurence and if not worth the price. Learn what you can in groups like this and others, and on the American Diabetes websites. buy magazines like Diabetes forcast and Better Homes and Gardens puts out a diabetes magazine too. What ever you do make your husband learn to test himself, give his own shots when that day comes, be responsible for knowing what foods to choose and how much exercise. I'm not trying to make you a bad wife but you may not always be there for him so he needs to learn to care for himself. You need to learn so you can help him if he gets to a point where he can no longer care for himself but until that day make him do it. It is for his own good to learn.
Be sure he sees a doctor regular, gets his feet examined often, sees an eye doctor not just a glasses doctor but eye doctor once a year, and a dietician. Plus a dentist. Dental problems can lead to infection and diabetics get gum infections easier then most. It's a lot to swallow all at once but Rome wasn't built in a day. Start slow and turn these things into habits so he does them automatically. I have routines that help me. I get up, make the coffee, check my sugar, take my oral medication and my shots, give the dogs their pills, and then a treat , then sit down with my coffee. It is such a habit it comes naturally. I have the rest of the days meds laid out and my food planned. I also check for my many doctor appointments and I still see my dietician once a year so she can help me fix what isn't working with my diet. As I lose weight I see my doctor again and have my medication reduced. Good luck to you both. Ask lots of questions. That is how you learn.

The local ADA does not offer anything free of charge and classes can be too expensive.

Before ordering magazines etc. find out if he is Type 1 or 2. Altering recipes and many of the magazine articles apply to Type 2. I find reading articles off the internet to be just as informative and free.

From your note we are assuming your doctor did not offer much information or an appt. very soon. If he did not provide info or another appt. by now you need adifferent MD.

Trish is right and call your medical insuence company and ask them what they cover and if they cover lessons. Ask them to refer you to another doctor for him. We are so never stop asking. When I need to know something that is what I do. learn the facts. Good luck to you and your husband. He will learn to control this. I've had this disease for many many years and I'm keeping mine under control so it can be done.
