Who I Deserving of a Flu Shot?

The thoughts that are being espoused in our country are scary and appauling. Who is worthy to receive the swine flu vaccination? Who will pick and choose those who are worthy. Who is important enough to the collective people that they would need to be protected?

I know that I would not be one of those people. Little old me, firstly old, who needs old people around? How about politicians? Oh yes, they are worthy. Who else?

Those evil wall street types and bankers, oil company executives, pharmaceutical ceos, insurance salesmen....they don't deserve it!

Stock up on the hand sanitizer, stores are running out of it and the manufacturers can't keep up. Use soap and water when you can, cause it's better than the hand sanitizer at getting rid of the germs. As a side note, I had to stop using one of the generic sanitizers as it was tearing up my hands, something the Purell never did in over a decade of usage. I found an online supplier and have stocked up.

yes I remember the Hong Kong flu......its not fun but unless you are frail you can get through it. You may feel like you will die but you generally will not. I think the pnemonia shot is more important.

I got married while still in college and my ex husband, recently returned from Vietnam, and I had the Hong Kong Flu at the same time. I have never been so sick inmy life--and not one would come to help because they would have caught it.

We survived, but we were young and healthy. My apartment, I remember, looked like a bomb hit it. We were down for days.

I can't even get the flu shot--I'm allergic to eggs, so I'm just hoping for the best.

the hig risk group are:
children;
prenant women,
people with depressed immune systems;
si far people over 60 seem to not be gettin h1n1 but the every day typical for the season flu.
I have always wondered why does the flu virus pefers the cold might anyone know?

As far as I know, people with depressed immune systems shouldn't get the shot. I don't think the virus prefers the cold, but people tend to spend more time in crowded indoor situations in the winter than in the summer, thereby making contracting the flu easier.

aries: Actually people with auto-immune diseases are encouraged to get the shot, so I guess it would depend on what causes thier depressed immunity. The thinking being these folks would be at greater risk if they didn't get the flu vaccine. The virus vaccine's uses an inactive virus.

Your point about the cold and that its the crowded indoor situations is exactly on the mark - it is the close proximity of people that spreads the virus.

My friend, who doesn't make the age threshold (I think he's 58 or 59) was told that he should get the shot because he's diabetic.

I'm diabetic and have asthma so I should get it..but there is none available to get. And we think the Govt can run healthcare?? Yeah right!
Another argument against the plan!

Zorroluver: As much as I like to blame Obama for the shortage of the H1N1 - the shortage does not lie with the any administration. The truth is that this virus didn't yield as many doses per egg as prior seasonal flu vaccines.

They seeded the eggs of course months ago and early adopters (pharmacuitical companies) began to see the yield differences at the end of the first runs. More vaccine is coming mid to late November as pharm companies who came online latter were able to adjust for low yield runs.

Apparently critics do not see the irony in my post.

I would have been able to get an H1N1 shot if I chose to. I am actually directly involved in getting it all to market, as I work at the company that manufactures it. I chose to not get the shot when it was offered to all of us.
The reason we were offered it was because we are directly involved in making it and if we were lost it would take months, or years to train others to do the work that we do.
So it has nothing to do with ME being able to get a shot.

My point is that our society makes value judgements as to who is worthy to receive certain types of care. The Reuters article was about wall street people having received the shot, so my observation was we decide that they are unworthy of protection.
That's all, just food for thought. I'm glad it stirred some discussion.
