Rare whale gathering sighted - 60 of them!

A large group of a rarely sighted, mysterious species of whale has been seen off the coast of Antarctica.

Approximately 60 Arnoux's beaked whales were seen and photographed frolicking on the surface in the Gerlache Strait.

Few sightings of this enigmatic species are made in the wild, and even less in waters near to shore.

The sighting, of the largest group ever recorded, is also the first time this species of whale has been seen socialising at the water surface.

Four years ago, my family and I watched two California Gray Whales feeding below us several hundred feet away as we had fish and chips in the Doghouse Tavern on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. One of the whales was said to be seventy feet long and the other about sixty. They were still feeding when we finished our meals an hour later.

We were later told that the California Grays had been frequenting Puget Sound for the past few years now that Whaling (especially in American waters) has ended.
