Events/Restaurants

Good Morning Arizona,

Each month I have been posting events around the state that sound like fun and that you might like to attend. I get lots of the events from listening to our local news shows and checking out several websites, one of which is
arizonaguide.com. I noticed this month, the arizonaguide website was re-designed and it is no longer easy to navigate the way it was prior. Before, I could just enter dates and all the events within those dates would come up all over the state. Now, I have to search different links and it is really hard to find events, so I won't be using that site anymore for posting purposes. I also subscribe to the Phoenix New Times e-letter every week and find a few events.

This Saturday, at the Duck & Decantur location on Camelback and 16th Street there is the 5th annual Certified Local Event. This features businesses from our area showcasing their business. There will be food-tasting and entertainment. I plan to attend this event.

The Phoenix Public Market has now taken their market indoors. The grand opening was last week. It is located just behind the previous outdoor market, this one is located on Pierce Street. This is a great farmer's market and much, much more. So much fun to go early on a Saturday morning. You can Google Phoenix Pubic Market and all info will come up.

A gentleman by the name of Charles Phoenix-comedian, is hosting what he calls a Retro Slide Show. Check his website at charlesphoenix.com for all the details. This looks like a fun event. Charles goes way back in history in state after state to show what went on then and now. When asked what is an old landmark in Phoenix he recommends we see, he said we should all have lunch or dinner once at a restaurant called Bill Johnson's Big Apple Restaurant, good home cooking. You can Google the restaurant and find several locations.

Glendale has holiday shopping and Glendale Glitter beginning this month. Check out visitglendale.com.

A couple of restaurants I would like to mention in Central Phoenix are; That's A Wrap on 7th St near McDowell and McAlpine's, also on 7th Street near Oak. McAlpine's is an old 50's restaurant and has been in the area a long time.

If you would like to send a gift of cookies or cupcakes, please check out Urban Cookies on 7th Street near Highland, or go to urbancookies.com. Best chocolate chip cookie in town.

I forgot to mention that Bill Johnson's Restaurant has an all-you-can-eat
Thanksgiving Feast from 9-5 on Thanksgiving Day,it is $12.99 for turkey and all the fixins and $19.99 for the prime rib. If you don't feel like cooking, this is a great, long-time Phoenix restaurant to have a wonderful dinner.

Sherrie, I've never been to the Phoenix Public Market, but intend to go. Is there adequate parking or do you have to drive around to find some? (I'm also not very familiar with downtown Phoenix...)

I listen to a radio station here in Prescott Valley that has a website with events on it. Here is the link if you want to check it out. I like some of the items they always advertise.

Hi Lyn - I've been several times to the outdoor market and have never had a problem finding parking, however, it is best to get there early. They open at 8 a.m. There are a couple of dirt lots nearby. I can't picture the new indoor market in my mind, but I imagine there is good parking. Lots of people are now taking the lightrail down Central because it drops you off right at the market. As I said, if you can get there at 8 a.m. that's best. People do come and go which is good. This indoor market should really be nice.
