More bowlin' bitchin'

Well, as the 'Sergeant at Arms' in the bowling league, it's my job to make sure that nobody gets out of control. Keep in mind that this is a Wednesday afternoon league, and it's all women, and the average age is over 60. So, my only real task is making sure the smokers don't smoke near the other bowlers but in the designated smoking areas. (It's a non-smoking league.)

However, when I was on vacation, our two smokers, who like to freely share their carcinogens with others, decided they could smoke at the desk, right next to other bowlers. One of the subs went to the desk and asked Fred, the bowling center employee to ask them to move to the designated area.

First he told her that the league was not non-smoking, but she reminded him that it was. (I think that he probably mean that the bowling center is not a smoke-free facility, which it isn't.) Then he said that if he had some walk-ins who smoked, he could put them right next to our league, and that there was nothing that she could do about it.

HUH? What's the point of being snotty and disrespectful to your own customers? This is a small league and certainly isn't financially carrying the bowling center, but we are there for 30 weeks and when the center wants us to change our time to accommodate tournaments that they bid to get, we just do; no complaints, we just change our time to help them out.

So, as I was talking it over with he league president she said that she had asked the employee not to put a family right next to our league. (There were 8 lanes open.) He told her that since we don't rent the lane next to us he can put anybody there he chooses.

So, I wrote a litter to the owner about the incidents that I heard of, and the one that happened to me with this same guy last season. Hopefully he'll have a talk with the a*hole. In these tough economic times I can't believe that employees are so disrespectful to their customers.

Don't you already know: it's because it's a women's league. When I bowled, it was the same thing. Any money or trophies that were added on behalf of the house were by far less than anything they gave out to the men. The golf league was even worse. The men got money from the house; the women got wooden spoons and other cooking gadgets.

On behalf of the house, I will admit that the men usually spend more than the women because they're bigger drunks than the women. In golf, the men would sit in the clubhouse, drink and make lewd remarks at and about the women as they came in off the course. In bowling, it's as much a reason to drink as bowl. The men can bowl a lot faster than women, but it still takes them as long because they spend half their time in the bar. So it became pretty obvious to me that if a problem arises re: rules, etc., it will be settled along gender lines. And in your case, the house cannot make women stop smoking because they won't make men stop smoking.

You are so right about the golf leagues and tennis is not much better. The woman golfers have to wait until 11:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays for a tee time. Also, years ago, our public tennis courts were clay and each morning the park employees would roll the courts. After that was done each day, no one could play on the courts until 4:00 pm because the women would mess up the surface during the day before the men got a chance to play.

Sounds like the stone age regarding the smoking thing. Over here all public buildings are no smoking areas. Seems the tobacco companies still have the legislatures in your state by the short and curlies. Just wait until a few employees develop second hand smoke related injuries and sue the shit out of a few businesses for damages. You'll see how quickly laws can be changed.

There is still smoking even in restaurants here, as disgusting as that is. Public government buildings do not allow smoking, nor do stores.
