I don't know about you Razz, way to much time on your hands today!
Why couldn't we see an Arizona Marlins? If the Marlins move to Az, they could keep their name.
I can't imagine why we have some of the ones we have (especially in College sports) -- Gamecocks, Terrapins, to name two.
But to play along, let me throw out....
"Anything" Yankees other than NY. If the Yanks moved, they'd still be called the NY Yankees or they'd change there name entirely. Which brings me to another one --- New Jersey JETS.
Actually, I have been quite busy today, Mike ~ You may be too big of a sports nut to play!
Here's one:
The Arkansas CAVALIERS ! LOLOLOLOLOL
Sorry Razz, didn't mean anything by my comment.
UW Illini
The Chicago Capones (I know I broke the rules)
The Detroit Slums
The San Francisco Gays!
I always thought it oughta be against the law for a team moving out of a city to retain its name. St Louis Rams, is there a ram in the entire state? Old farts like me then get confused, I still call the Colts, the Baltimore Colts, but at least I don't refer to the Dodgers as the Brooklyn Dodgers like Bob Dole (yikes!, what a gaff). The Utah Jazz, huh? I was glad that part of the deal with the Browns moving to Baltimore was they could not retain the name. I wonder how many people today realize today's Browns are not the same storied franchise that had decades of history?
Remember the Minnesota Lakers? I do (I was only five) -- when they moved to LA it made no sense to me to keep the name -- isn't Minnesota the land of lakes? (10,000 to be specific!).
How about the Milwaukee Braves moving to Atlanta? (Brewers is a better name, imho)
Ahhh, the Braves! Now there was a team! Eddie Mathews, Warren Spahn, and Hank Aaron! And 'knot-holer' tickets for 75 cent bleacher seats, and that included a 2 tickets for treats! The bus left st. Agnes grade school and we were off for a great day at the ballpark! :)
Cute little note: I thought the Star Spangled Banner was OUR song: '...and the home of the Braves!' What can I say, I was just a little girl then. ; )
Gee, I vaguely recall that the Lakers used to be in Minnesota. Never occurred to me that is the reason for the name. That is exactly the point I was trying to make. The Braves have a more generic nickname, there are Native Americans in just about every state, so the name can follow them much better. Putting aside the fact that some find it offensive, much like I find "Fighting Irish" offensive ;-P
Lily, that's funny. I had the exact same thought as a kid.
