Bring Back The Draft???
Would a military guy want to be in a foxhole next to someone who didn't want to be there, but b/c of the draft, was forced to? All the military in Afghanistan and Iraq are volunteers, some on their 3rd and 4th tour of duty. I admire their patriotism protecting us from terrorism on American soil. There are allies fighting alongside Americans by choice b/c they believe in freedom.
There doesn't seem to be a peaceful settlement to the war. Obama has extended the olive branch, and the jihadists want no part of it. They hate Americans. So instead of resolution lets continue the fighting and casualties on both sides.
I don't believe in sending our kids to fight a war we can't win. They come home with mental, physical and severely disabling injuries, or in body bags. This may sound selfish, but I want to spend what years I got left being with my kids.

Not sure how many people watched the Moyers' video clip. The only reason he said "bring back the draft" is because then those in power would scramble and end the conflict(s).
He didn't seriously suggest a draft.
This country can't afford to police the world. Time to quit attacking countries that don't pose a direct threat.

I agree, Zoe. That's what I got out of the video as well. He is just fed up with the wars and the impersonal nature of it. He wants people to be aware of it.

The nuclear age has prevented another World War simply because the war mongers in Washington and Moscow are no longer safe from the effects of war. They can no longer sit with their fat bellies hanging over the bar and say "war is hell" (for others) as they are now included in the total equation. And with the historically recent inclusion of mercenaries and contractors in the military the draft would undercut Chenies group of overpaid thugs looting foreign countries. I can't see the draft ever being reinstated. Sad to say but there will have to be another option to gain control over the M/I complex as it is a source of employment for millions of workers at home and overseas.

True, JB. And it IS amazing that no one — as far as we know — has used a nuclear weapon against a population since the US in 1945. It is almost a miracle.

It should be an individuals choice whether to enter military service. But those that have chosen are being run into the ground with multiple deployments.
I wish I had an answer.

I don't know the answer either — other than scaling back conflicts. But even stopping war takes a while.
I also think it's wrong to send soldiers into action over and over. CNN just reported that studies find it takes two years to return to "normal" stress after a year in combat. It takes many people a lifetime.
Of course, there's such a stigma attached to mental illness or to simply admitting to a problem that people who need help the most won't seek it. Aside from the unfairness of multiple deployments, psychologically devastated individuals are being sent back to hell.
And I still don't know how they justify shipping national guard members overseas when these men and women signed up to protect individual states. What if there's a disaster or a direct need for homeland security?
