Anatomy of a Pink Grapefruit...

In 1750, clergymen searching for the Garden of Eden's Tree of Knowledge discovered the grapefruit in Barbados and dubbed it the "forbidden fruit." But the juicy, vitamin-packed citrus will probably never be forbidden from a healthy diet.
Just one-half delivers 80% of the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C and 6% of vitamin A. The tart fruit also contains lycopene, a carotenoid responsible for the pink hue and a potent antioxidant.
Florida produces 75% of the world's supply. Check with your doctor as grapefruit may interfere with certain prescription drugs.

Antioxident alternatives~ apricots, papaya, tomatoes, and watermelon also contain the carotenoid lycopene!

Great information, thank you! I just bought a couple of pink grapefruits ~ they were 1/2 the price of navel oranges at my local store, so it was a savings, too.

My doctor wanted me to take cholesterol meds a few years ago, but you can't eat grapefruit when taking those. I told her I wasn't giving up grapefruit, & that's that! She told me grapefruit taken with those meds lowers your cholesterol too much. My solution? Eat more grapefruit!

I love my thinking!

The absolutely best person to ask about interactions is your pharmacist--even my doctor told me to check with him when I asked. I was put on a new cholesterol med when Lipitor was lowering my pressure too much. This one doesn't mention grapefruit at all in the warnings. So they researched it for me--turns out this one doesn't have a problem.

But the pharmacist did say that personally he wouldn't overdo it because grapefruit operates through the liver and can change how you metabolise many meds of there's enough of it (like the grapefruit diet, I guess). I'm so glad I can have it in moderation--I love ruby reds!

I did discuss this with my doctor, since I am on Simvastatin. He suggested that if I really wanted grapefruit, I should have it in the morning, since I take my cholesterol meds. at night! Eight hours between shouldn't create a problem.

I am so happy to hear that, JD. (the 8 hour space). I love grapefruit and always think I have to avoid it.

I take Simvastatin, too, and I really love the pink and red grapefruit, so I may treat myself now and then since the grapefruit season is about to start.

I love grapefruit - juice AND the fresh fruit - ALL colors. However, I was on Lipitor for years and my dr AND the drugist told me not to eat it. I have recently been switched to Simvastatin. I'll have to check that out.
