Several years ago, as the step-daughters got married, we started a tradition where hubby & I either ate out on Thanksgiving, or had a simple, relaxed meal at home together. That way the girls and their families could eat with the in-laws. Everyone was happy. Then we would have the girls and their families over on Thanksgiving Saturday for a big family feast. They all got to eat out twice in one weekend, we got to have a relaxing holiday, and still got leftover turkey - everyone was really happy!
This year, my oldest step-daughter (who remarried just last month) said she wanted to host Thanksgiving at her place. So we all get to travel to the Houston area for the holiday. And I STILL get a relaxing day!
We usually have the Thanksgiving Day meal at my parents' house and those in our family who cook (the list for this has dwindled down considerably over the years!) help contribute to the meal. That means mainly my mom and I put together the meal. One thing that helps is that my brother-in-law usually does a big deep-fried turkey.... he's perfected his method over the years and they are really yummy. What does everyone else do?
Big family meal at the farm and them watch the football game.

Rh296, who prepares your big family meal? Does that person do turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings?
Has anyone else done deep-fried turkeys?
Nope. But we like to cook ours on the grill. We use the indirect method and I put an aluminum pan under the turkey so I can still get those good drippings for gravy-making.
Our family all gathers at my Niece and Nephew-in-law's house. Their kids are happy because all their "stuff" is there. We each bring a dish - one time we had a tex mex dinner - another time we had pizza - once in a while we have traditional turkey and dressing. My nephew got one of those things to deep fry turkey in, and he's started brewing his own beer so we probably will have deep fried turkey and Will's home brewed beer this year.
Have not decided. My sister wants me to come over so probably will stay local and do that. I was invited to NYC but being the tightwad I am decided not to go HA even though I had a free place to stay. Not early enough to get a good deal on a plane ticket. My family deep fries turkey too. It is good but I also LOVE turkey browned in a bag. To me they are juicier.
Also have to have...sweet potatoes covered in crumbly nuts and partially with marshmallows for the traditionalist. and pumpkin pie....
This is the first Thanksgiving with my fiancee and her family. It will be a joining of our two families and a joining of our traditions.
My daughter will continue with her tradition of cooking the turkey and dressing, per her mother recipe. I will bake and glaze a ham (my own secret recipe). Kathy and her sons will add their own specialities, should prove to be a wonderful feast and wonderful day.
Kathy likes to go shopping on "Black Friday", I am not so sure about it. I guess I can give it a try, as long as I am with her.
Ginger,
16 hungry folks (so far) for traditional Turkey & (cornbread) Dressing with all the usual trimmings at my place this year, about 4PM (to accomodate the rabid football watchers in the group).
(btw, can you have Thanksgiving without "green bean casserole??? - i tried NOT making it one year & "heard about it" all the rest of the year.)
CHUCKLE!

I'm leaving the Friday before Thanskgiving for a trip to the coast. I'll be back Wednesday and will probably fix a small dinner for the two of us or we may go somewhere. I've never eaten out on Turkey Day. Best part is ten days off from work.
