Who's an "American"?

Last night, a Canadian friend referred to me as an American. When I said that anyone who lives in the Americas should be called an American, she said that the term does apply specifically to those who live in the U.S. A guy from Argentina called me that too and gave the same response to my response.

The term "estadounidense" has recently evolved in Latin America. Roughly, it's "UnitedStatesian". As difficult as it is to pronounce, I prefer it. Otherwise, we arrogate the term "American" to just one nation in the Americas.

Soooo....do you all consider yourselves Americans? UnitedStatesians?

We do have nicknames in other countries, but by and large it is understood world wide that citizens of the U.S. are Americans. No one calls citizens of Canada or Mexico Americans even though it's technically correct. Personally, I hate the term "UnitedStatesian" - just call me American. Everyone knows what that means.

I love this discussion. My feeling is that the true Americans are the Native Americans that were here when the foreigners arrived. But no, they call them Indians. It always amazes me that Gringos often say, "go back to where you came from" We were here. This was our land.

When we can all see ourselves as "connected," perhaps we won't need to distinguish ourselves as American. Because to white people. Americans are mostly WASPs, blue eyed and blond hair. They don't consider Mexican Americans- American. I feel I am more American than the ones whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower.

And now after reading all these fine answers for a couple of days now I come up with this.

.......who cares and what does it really matter?

" I feel I am more American than the ones whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower."

Your ancestors came across the Bering land bridge from Siberia. Maybe Native Americans should be caller Siberian - Americans instead of Indians.

Make that five. And the fact that you're reading this post makes at least six times you've opened this thread. Now that's what I call apathy.

Actually, I'm surprised the message lasted this long. Not one of the burning issues of our day but I've always liked to play with obscure questions (just ask my teachers) like this. Thanks to all for responding.
