I can pull it up, but how do I get the icon back in the sidebar? It's my kid's machine and he'll go ballistic if it isn't where it belongs in the sidebar.
Right clicking on it under the search doesn't work.
Once Word is open, the icon should appear in the Dock. Right click on it and chose your option to keep it in the Dock
GG,
You may have noticed that when you typed "Word" into Spotlight that Microsoft Word appeared in two places in the results list; under Top Hits and under Applications. Generally if you type the name of an application into Spotlight, and especially if you give it a few seconds to think about it, that app will become the Top Pick. Hitting the Return Key will open that Top Pick app. That's nice if you aren't ready to grab the mouse or if you just prefer the keyboard to the mouse. But, you say, you had to use the mouse to open Spotlight? Not if you use the Command-Spacebar shortcut. :-)
If you're like me and you don't want to clutter your Dock with a bunch of apps you don't use all that often, try using Spotlight to launch them, beginning with the Command-Spacebar shortcut.

Well, I have to keep the sidebar as my son prefers it. It's his computer. I'll try the suggestions to see if I can get it to reappear. Now Safari is stuck, not responding and won't force quit. Grrrrrrr.
I used to have computer trouble when I shared mine with my son, years ago...it's best to have your own machine if you can afford it, as you can keep it just as you like!
In the meantime goddess, Ineed to get that icon back on the sidebar where it belongs. It hasn't shown up on the dock even with Word open. I'm flummoxed.
Go to your Applications folder in Finder. Do a search for Word or Microsoft Office. That should take you to the right place, assuming it is on your computer.
If you can open a Word Document but cannot find Word in the Applications or Microsoft Office, you might not have it anymore. That happened to me once with my old PC.
If you need to use it you can down load Neo Office. They have a compatible program similar to Word.
Just to see if I could, I put a new icon on my dock. Here is what I did:
1. Click on Finder to open it in a new window.
2. Click on Applications. You will see a split window, images above and a list of the applications below.
3. Look for the application called Microsoft Office. There should be a little triangle to the left of it.
4. Click that little triangle. It should reveal an indented list of all the programs in the Microsoft Office Suite that is on the computer.
5. Look for the "W" for the Word program.
6. Click on that "W" and drag it to your dock. Wait until the space opens for it and then release the icon. It should stay where you put it.
