Old English Mastiff

Hi, I'm Barbara. Just joined your group. I have a 5 year old Mastiff. Small for a Mastiff, 150# but he still wants to be a lap dog.

Anybody else out there with Mastiff's. i would post a picture of him, but still trying to figure out how to do that

Hi Coppervalli, thanks for the welcome. Brother is gorgeous. He looks like he's a lot bigger than Max.

Love your Mastiff's! I work for a woman who boards dogs on occation and she had a pair once, a recued Great Dane and a Mastiff. Both female and the very best of friends. She was not comfortable with either and told be they wern't friendly. Well when I first met the the Mastiff was VERY prtective of the GD, but as the day passed and she got to know me she laided down like a puppy and pawed at me to give her hugs...which I happily did.
Another time a friend of ours came over saying he has found a boxer...I look in his car to find a VERY huge Matiff, male,(boy was he stinky, unnutered and had been out roaming)I get in the car to say hi and he promply tried to lay in my lap, all 150++ of him! His head was soooooo big, what a sweet boy though. My friend brought him to a shelter near where he founf him and they knew him. The owner gave him to a family with a farm and some kids. I hope he roams no more.
I wish I had room for this wonderful breed, I love the 2 I met.

I know someone who has a Mastiff and she takes her dog everywhere. Her dog is so sweet and goes to dog parks, swimming, etc.

Max has never learned to swim. Had him in the water up to his neck and he had no buoyancy at all. If he had kept on, think he would have kept walking on the bottom. Loves water, just can't swim.

Have never met a Mastiff that didn't think he/she was still a baby. Big lap dogs, love cuddles, very affectionate.

If anyone really wants one and thinks they don't have room....well, if you're willing to give up your couch, lol, and a short walk every day, you have plenty of room. Pretty laid back and definitely not "hyper" types. Would be comfortable having Max in an apartment.

The bigger the dog, the more room you actually have. I read somewhere awhile back that large dogs do not take up that much room. They need walking but once in the house they just lie down somewhere and sleep. They don't move around like small dogs that are always underfoot. Mastiffs are beautiful docile dogs.

Actually most are laid back, but some can be more active. I don't let him on my furniture because the type of fabrick won't take it. Bought it before I had big dogs. But mine will park his big butt in your lap and he is a great foot warmer, at least until you need to get up. LOL Generally they don't have free run of the entire house, but that isn't because of the Mastiff. Daisy, the Bloodhound, will get into too much. One thing of note for any of the giant breeds. Forget coffee tables and pretties on your end tables. They can sweep them clear with one swipe of the tail! That is, if Daisy doesn't find it and chew it up first! LOL
