Scapegoats

In another group someone claimed George W Bush was a “scapegoat”. With that in mind, let's catalog the drivers that have created this Recession, and make sure we agree when these collective actions happened.

Yeah, I'm shocked, LLL.

And that changes a word of what Bhubbel1 wrote... how, precisely?

..how about all of the lies?

Bush's own words incriminate him fanning the fires of Freddie and Fannie. Do you have any video of hubs prevarications?

I didn't think so ...

Hubbell and Dagon copied, pasted, and parroted lies:

As much as I hate not to completely blame GW for the current mess I can't forgive Alan Greenspan either. He was a kep player and must shoulder a good part of the blame. His desire to deregulate everything financial cannot be overlooked. With controls the financial industry behaved like a kids turned loose in a candy shop.

Bhubbell1 gave you a long list of easily verifiable facts, LLL. Everything he specified above is simple to look up, and his sources, so far from being invented, are the OMB, the OFHEO, congressional testimony, the Financial Times, Budget Analytical Perspectives, cabinet meetings, and widely reported corporate announcements.

And the youtube video of Barney Fwank telling the world that Fannie and Fweddie are just fine two weeks before they fell on their noses - and well after they had both previously announced that they had to re-state their accounting because their losses were so huge - is also quite real. I'm sorry it was broadcast on Fox, but I feel reasonably safe in asserting that that was indeed Fwank, not some impersonator. (Who could impersonate that?)

But your total, complete denial of all these things, and your assertion that all those sources - from the OMB to congressional testimony - that don't agree with you are lies... hmmm. I begin to wonder if there's any more point in talking to you than there is in talking to a housecat - except the housecat would be more civil than you are. Rather less prone to calling everyone around with a different point of view (and maybe even a better knowledge of history) a liar.

Dagon, consider the source of bhubbell's list.

"The White House released this list of attempts by President Bush to reform Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac since he took office in 2001."

Would you put your transgressions on your job resume?

If you were POTUS and wanted something done--for real--wouldn't you put up more effort than addressing the issue directly, on average, once a year for six years, and with most of those instances occuring in the final months of your term when you were trying to save face for no other reason than the benefit of your presidential library?

Does Congress bear ANY blame for the current economic problems in this country? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

This list from the White House website was up for months before Bush left office. No one disputed it.

Unlike the rest of you Kool-Aid drinkers for Obama, I have a number of problems with President Bush. Far from thinking he was great, I think that he got one thing right (Protecting us from another attack), an most of the other stuff wrong (don't even get me started on Iraq, Prescription Drug coverage for seniors, border security, etc.

Gotta go. My cat wants to talk to me about something.

Bhubbell, normally I would be offended by your assumption that I don't have problems with Bush, but I'll assume you are flustered. lol

Do you think it's because the cat's got your tongue?

Fannie and Freddie were not the cause of the housing bubble. They were not the ones creating the non-conforming loans that triggered the melt down.

This is a long read because the data is so voluminous, but it does disprove the Republican orthodoxy that "Fannie, Freddie and CRE caused the housing bubble and bust":
