How Have You Been Famous?

Andy Warhol said, "In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes."

Because I'm an active person who puts himself out there, I've always been famous in a small way. My thought for tonight is this must be true for all of us to one degree or another.

For example, here I am accepting an "Actor of The Year" Award at W.H. Taft High School:

This event made me famous for 15 minutes among people who cared about drama at that school.

I could cite dozens of other examples: newspaper interviews, opening nights, poetry readings -- there's even an old radio interview I could link to right here, but won't, because the topic is political.

How about you? How have you been famous for 15 minutes within a small circle, i.e. that big wedding, Prom Queen, winning an award at the County Fair, etc.

did you notice my comment about my family's relationship to Lon Chaney, Jr.?

Normally I wear the pink, but for this occasion decided the blue would be better.

More petticoats.

Dionne Warwick suggested I was mentally challenged.

Did you know Dionne Warwick got lost on the way to San Jose? She couldn't read a freaking map.

Wurdguy, you are out there and doing business. An honor to have you as one Member of this Group.

When I was in graduate school I lived in a boarding house for international students.
One of their traditions was to host a dinner featuring an international cuisine every Thursday.
There were some foreign students who were good cooks and others who just liked to do it and they put in most of the work. They usually needed some help and I had never cooked anything in my life but would help them with the little chores when they were short handed.
One day a reporter from the local paper came in to do a story on this and took a picture of me stirring a pot while the cook was preparing something, that was the main picture in that article with my name on it.
A number of people saw the picture and were convinced that I was a "gourmet cook" but just too modest to admit it.
A professor of mine asked me to make a meal for forty people at a party at his house. I could not convince him that I knew nothing about cooking.
I got some help from friends and this party became quite a success to be followed by many more.
I learned to cook because I could not convince him that I did not know how to.

Skeeter,

In fairness to Ms Warwick, she wasn't without reason for saying I was mentally challenged. It was the spring of 1971, she was singing her bottom off on tour and she was about to lose the better part of a night's sleep because of me. She deserved a little better than she got.

Well, I still think you are a great asset to this Group.

Regret I don't read or write fiction, or I'd comment on that as well.

As for big stars, I was pinched on the ass by Divine.

Say what you want, bet it was more fun than getting ranked by Ms Warwick.

This was in North Beach backstage at the Palace, also the early 70's. Those were heady days. They won't be repeated for us. But I know my son and his peers are having something like them right now.

Surgery on my right thumb in the morning, wurd...single-digit typing tomorrow, if any.

Nite.

I was interviewed by the local news after I adopted by second daughter. It was a story about international adoptions. By the way, National Adoption Day is November 21st.

Let me take another shot at the original question.

Got a young friend I sometimes run into when I'm out and about. He sees me, he comes up and invariably he'll bend my ear for a minute or so -- I must remind him of his father or something. Anyway, a couple of days later, and this has happened at least twice over the years, an eager face will walk up to me, introduce himself and say, "I saw you talking to [first guy's name] the other day."

Nothing like basking in reflected glory. I don't have to understand the genesis of the glory, it's enough knowing I can warm myself in the afterglow.
