Kelly, the protector of her poms

Pewter, Sherry's pom, has been staying with me while his Mom is on a trip. Pewter might weigh as much as 5 lbs.He has been having a ball playing with Honey. Last night, he and Honey were rolling around the room playing pommy games. Pewter was on top of Honey wooling her around -they both were having fun, but Kelly Collie felt that her Honeybun was being roughed up too much.

As I watched, Kelly walked over to them, and laid down side by side with Honey so that Honey's body was touching Kelly. Kelly never snarled, lifted a lip or any of that, but Pewter got the message that Kelly thought he was being to rough on Kelly's Honeybun.

Pewter got up and walked away and sat down and looked at Kelly. I'll always wonder what silent communication passed between them.

Sounds just like my Border Collie Maggie playing with my little Chi ,Co- Co Pop.
They communtcate via "esp."
I love to watch the play and the silent communication. You can almost hear Co Co saying "yes Mommy." when Maggie feels that she is getting too rough.....and needs a scold.

Collies are just wonderful.

When they were more popular, I would hear so many stories from people with multiple children about what good babysitters collies were. Many times a collie would push her way between two arguing children and not let them near each other. Not a snarl or growl or any aggressive behavior was shown; the collie just became a wall. I have heard stories about collies standing between an open staircase and a toddler or between a lit fire and a toddler. A collie I sold to a pregnant woman spent all of her time under the crib after the baby was born and would come and fetch Mom when the baby would cry or fuss. Another collie I know almost got shot by cops when a woman called them in terror after seeing a small child screaming as a collie tugged on the seat of his pants. It turned out that this toddler had wandered from home and was at a hole in a fence that was meant to keep people out of a rainwater catch basin. The collie lived with the toddler and had gone along for the walk and when this child ventured near danger, the collie would not allow the child near the potentially deadly pool at the bottom of the slope.

You could fill an encyclopedia with the stories of everyday heroism that collies have exhibited.

That is so true - and I am very lucky that Kelly - the foster sheltie, grew up to be a collie at about 6 months of age, she looked very much like a sheltie - weighed about 14 lbs - had been picked up as a stray - I was fostering her for Austin Sheltie Rescue, and ended up adopting this wonderful girl.

She is a very important member of my household!!
