Copper Harbor.....

Copper Harbor Michigan. Its way up on the Keewanau Peninsula. Some beautiful scenery and one of my favorite places to go. We usually go in summer but when my son married in January a few years ago he was married there. Well it was really cool going there in winter. Seeing no traffic on the roads but snowmobiles (other than us) and the depth of the snow in winter is something else. Nothing going on there in winter. One store I think and a gas station maybe, all filling snow machines.
This is the Eagle Harbor lighthouse, as you see the bay is frozen.

main method of transportation throughout the winter months in the smaller towns. Oh yes, there are plenty of trucks and stuff too.

Evenings at Copper Harbor

Daytime view from a bit lower down Brockway Mountain.

Another view from the top of Brockway mountain......its really a big hill but when you are driving down it seems like a mountain. I hate the down trip.......

Copper Harbor and most of that part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was settled by men from Cornwall in England. They came to work in copper and silver and tin mines. The nearby cemetaries hold a wealth of information and history. You can get good Cornish Pasties there. Copper Harbor is at the very end of the Keewanau Peninsula

Nothing there but a few motels ,houses and a couple of stores and gift shops. Very cute place and very popular in summer. Nearby you can drive up Brockway Mountain and get a 360 view of the whole area. The scenic roads are very narrow and go through tiny towns. There is no industry nor much of anything in the way of making a living any more other than tourism. We used to go to the town dump to watch the bears but they dont let people do that anymore. Eagle Harbor is close by and a pretty lighthouse is about all that has to recommend it. Just my kind of places ............love the wild and empty beaches where you may spot a moose print or wolf..........wolves were reintroduced from Canada and are thriving there now. We had the privalege of seeing one once. A thrill I would just love to repeat. Only ever saw one bear other than the ones at the dump and he was crossing the road. Watching for wildlife is our main thing when we are out.
I could be very happy living up there in the wilds................sigh.............
My son lives close by in Baraga. I will do a post about that area soon. I have done this before in case it seems familiar but the photos were all lost when my photobucket account got moved.

Looks like an inviting place to be. I especially liked the way the "copper" lights show up in the nighttime photo....so appropriate a coloration for a place called "Copper Harbor".

Beautiful photos! I LOVE the nighttime shot! I've read about Copper Harbor and have it on my list of places to visit. Would love to explore the whole UP! So any places...so little time! Sigh...

When we have overseas visitors we always take them to Copper Harbor if we can.
Brockway Mtn Pass gives such a great view all around the peninsula. Check this site its new and not completed yet but has some nice pictures.
