Pomegranate

This week I picked up the first pomegranate of the season. I found the darkest red one that I could and now have it glowing on the counter. Here's a link about pomegranates. I did read another hint that said, to get out the anvils [get me slinging the lingo?], cut the pom in half, hold it upside-down over a dish and rap the not-cup side with the back of a wooden spoon. Wonder if it will work? I confess--I don't quite understand O'Hopp's methodology of de-seeding.

I score a pomegranate into about half a dozen sections and peel it over a bowl so it's easy for the fruit kernels to drop into a bowl. It's my favorite fruit.

I planted a pomegranate tree from seed. It took eight years before it bore its first flowers! I almost gave up.

No fruit yet! Last year it had three flowers. This year over a dozen blooms. Hoping for fruit next year!
The plant is deciduous.

When we moved to this house we left a huge pomegranate bush behind. I don't know if it had fruit on it or not this year. One of my favorite recipes given to me by my late father is pomegranate jelly. It's not that difficult to make and it's so yummy. Last week I was looking in the freezer section of our grocery store and they have frozen pomegranate kernels. I was very surprised to find that at our store. Thanks for the link Idamay.

Frozen pomegranate kernels--WOW! I've never seen them around here. I wonder if Trader Joe's might have them...
