Published Today

I am published today in the Letters Section of the New York Times (Monday, Nov. 2, Page A16).

I wrote this letter last Monday in response to an article about local Chinese officials who passed an ordinance which forces schoolchildren to stop and SALUTE *every car* that passes-by as they walk to school. The rationale of the Chinese officials is that this order makes it "safer" for the children and also "teaches them courtesy."

The Editor has given my letter the title: "Imposing Rules on Kids." It's in the actual paper and also on the web.

I don't know if this link will get you there -- not sure if one must sign-up first -- but here's the online Letters page with the headline to click:

(Of course it is published under my real name, which I rarely use online.)

>>that mischievous little boy does bring a smile<<

I know your retreats are women-only.

I have this brunette wig from the estate of Joan Crawford. There's a paisley empire in Lori's closet; looks like it might fit.

I'm sorry about that.

No big, it's happened twice. Just for being who I am, i.e. blond white male w/ a square jaw.

Thankfully, hitting me in the jaw is like hitting a lamppost. I fell both times but got right up and walked away, uninjured.

These guys practice their uppercut and it comes out of nowhere. It gives them satisfaction to watch you fall.

They think you're responsible for everything -- even when you're only 15.

Yeah... I know... Kids can be cruel, and often are.

I suffered through it myself, and I dare say that most of us here have... I figure it this way: "Anything that doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

I am DETERMINED that they WILL NOT beat me, OR make me beat myself... I am proud to describe myself as one OBSTINATE old broad!!

KEWL!!!!!

I had a letter published in our local paper a few weeks ago, about homeless people being just like anyone else except for being homeless (we don't have many "bag ladies" or "vacant-eyed burnouts" in our fair city--most of us just happen to have hit a bumpy patch in the road of life). But the NYT reaches more people than the lowly Appleton Post-Crescent does.

>>>But the NYT reaches more people than the lowly Appleton Post-Crescent does<<<

Well, this was a first for me, too.

arel, I've had many letters published in our local "Daily Pilot," as well as in the Los Angeles Times across the years. And congratulations on yours...sounds like a good one!

Neighbors have actually asked me to write in more, but I've stopped the practice for now. Some in the community disagree with my viewpoints, which could damage the local business I share with a Partner. So I've stopped local opinion writing for now.

But watch out when I retire in 2012. Then I'll be free and *heck on wheels*....

: = )

Great to hear from you today!
