Published Today

I am published today in the Letters Section of the New York Times (Monday, Nov. 2, Page A16).

I wrote this letter last Monday in response to an article about local Chinese officials who passed an ordinance which forces schoolchildren to stop and SALUTE *every car* that passes-by as they walk to school. The rationale of the Chinese officials is that this order makes it "safer" for the children and also "teaches them courtesy."

The Editor has given my letter the title: "Imposing Rules on Kids." It's in the actual paper and also on the web.

I don't know if this link will get you there -- not sure if one must sign-up first -- but here's the online Letters page with the headline to click:

(Of course it is published under my real name, which I rarely use online.)

I love letters to the editor and people who take the time to write one. You'd be surprised how few intelligent letters newspapers receive.

In my case this is entirely accurate: I am wandering in the mist, trying to find my way clear.

Also, my sincere thanks to coalminerwife and adolphinma for your kind words. Adolphinma, no one has ever responded to one of my scribbles in quite this way. Your comment is extremely meaningful and gratifying to me: thank you.

Where did Skeeter come from

One more chance to talk about myself -- whoopee!

(Typical male behavior, n'est pas?)

Anyway, I started on the web in 1996 with the handle David Tango. This is a wonderful nom de plume and perhaps I shall use it in publication one day.

But Tango was a great roue (accent egout) and even more licentious than I am here. You can tell that I enjoy double-entendre and Lori always laughs...so I do these jokes a lot.

But I often remind myself that we are California natives and not everyone on Eons was raised or is accustomed to our Left Coast sensibility: I try to control myself on this Group as much as possible.

Anyway, then came the stroke in 2002, where I was on my back, unable to rise, read, look at TV or do anything except listen to a portable radio by my head for 4 - 6 months. When I finally got back to the computer, David Tango had died, and the new name Skeeter just came to me from thin air.

Reason being, "Skeeter" to me means a freckle-faced kid with a slingshot in his back pocket -- a bit mischievous but not really dangerous:

SKEETER

Two things happened once I became "Skeeter:"

1. I learned that this word means "mosquito" in some parts of the country. Didn't know that.

2. I added the last name of "Thompson" -- then learned there is an actual rockstar drummer with this same name. So if you Google Skeeter Thompson you'll get the drummer, which is fine by me.

These days I reserve David Tango for aphorisms, which I construct as often as possible, because I love them.

For example, driving home this evening there was a woman of the female persuasion on the radio, talking about how she and all her GF's have *always* dreamed of having a HUGE wedding.

Due to my experience w/ my First, I made up an aphorism on the spot:

"The bigger the wedding, the bigger the divorce." --David Tango

Many times I have almost mentioned that "Skeeter" was an annoying insect in my area of the country, but wasn't sure how that information would be received... LOL... ;0))))

But yes, you are correct... I can definitely see you as a freckle-faced boy with a sling shot in his back pocket... and possibly a big black eye...;0))))

>>and possibly a big black eye...<<

not the eye, the jaw. i've been socked in the jaw more than once...out of nowhere and for no good reason. i still remember the name of the guy who did it in jr. high.

IMO, there is never a good reason to hit a person unless you are forced to physically defend yourself.

It was not my intent to bring up a painful memory... I'm sorry about that.

It was an endearing image of a cute little mischievous boy that I had in mind.
