New kid in our house!

The wife and I went to the Central California Bird Mart in Fresno yesterday. It's always a nice show with lots of EXCELLENT deals on cages, foods, toys AND birds! We went with the idea of getting some new toys for Buster and Rosco. Bringing home a new bird was not on the agenda. Of course - that's just what we ended up doing......

Anyway, without further adieu, here's Graysun. I think that's gonna be his name. Anyway, he's a 7 month old Greater Vasa parrot. They're generally referred to as "black parrots", but it's easy to see his more of a dark gray than black.
The bird breeder I got him (we think it's a him) had a hard time parting with him. She'd gotten him from a fellow breeder who has a pair of these that have been producing offspring for a couple of years now. Of course, like all babies, he's a sweetie and was a first (of this species) for her and she'd gotten attached to him. Her significant other had to prod her to bring him to the mart yesterday.

When I spotted him, I was incredulous. I hadn't seen a Vasa for sale in 20 years. And once I got to hold and cuddle him, I was doomed - or at least my finances were. We (the wife and I) eventually walked on to see the rest of the bird mart, but I had to go back and handle this fella one more time.
Heh - the wife knew I was wrenched this time. She actually started to rationalize us buying him. He WASN'T cheap - not by my standards anyway!
Even after holding him that second time, I was able to walk out to the car as we prepared to leave. Sitting in the car - keys in the ignition with my hand ready to twist them - we kept talking about this bird. There were LOTS of parrots and other birds there, but I like something different. And this guy's about as "different" as one can get in the world of parrots. I eventually DID start the car. But only AFTER I'd gone back inside and took ownership of Graysun. So there ya have it.

Our house has seemed a bit empty since we lost the three birds back in January. Graysun will liven things up a bit. It's been fun watching him since we brought him home. He's OK with us handling him and he's really inquisitive about any sort of food or toy I offer him. We picked fresh peppers and eggplant yesterday evening to make swiss steak with. I gave Graysun a whole bell pepper to explore and had had a ball ripping it up and eating some along the way. Same thing with a persimmon off our tree.
The only noise he's made is some soft squealing chortles he did after we covered his cage for the night.

If you're at all curious about Vasas, google Vasa parrot and there'll be plenty to read about this rare bird

Congratulations on your new baby! I've only seen a Vasa at bird marts -- and that's been awhile. He seems like a sweetie. I hope he gets along with the others and there isn't too much jealousy. Enjoy cuddling with your new baby, :-)

Thanks all. Graysun's pretty pliable at this stage. I hope to get him into a bigger cage today. I was gonna ressurect one that we'd kept a large Amazon in for years, but after power-washing it and letting it dry, I could still see oxidation on the rungs of it and I don't want him mouthing that stuff and ingesting it. I've got a plan B that I'm gonna try today. I'm mad at myself that I didn't buy a cage at the bird mart, but having spent so much on the bird - I figured I'd use the old one that was in storage. Thing is, at these bird marts, cages are SO inexpensive compared to what they are in pet stores and catalogs. So, if I can pull off my Plan B for now, next June I'll get a cage at the next bird mart.

I've gotten him out of his cage about a half dozen times so far. He's still a bit unsure about this whole adventure. He'll try ANYTHING I give him to eat. He's showed a preference for green beans and pomegranate, but has eaten a whole list of things. I don't like pelleted foods, so I serve our flock fresh and real stuff. I'm sure the pellets are great and convenient - it's just my way of nutrition.

It's one week today, that Graysun's been with us. He's proving to be a sweetheart of a bird!
He's OK with his new and significantly larger cage, but boy does he like to get out and play on top of it! And he's trying to talk! I can't believe it really, but he's trying to say things with a human voice. It's sorta sounds like someone gargling with inflections.

When I first let him out of his cage, he struts around all fluffed out with his tail spread like a turkey. He's such a ham. And he's OK with the wife and I handling him, petting him, kissing on him - wow! Who knew?

We're still keeping him IN his cage when we're not in the house to keep an eye on him, but I think once he understands (and I have no doubt that he will)about keeping to his alloted place in the room, we'll be able to leave him come and go from his cage all day. In summation, so far he's a charmer!

Glad to hear he's such a charmer. There's a bird mart here at the end of the month and you're tempting me to go - I haven't been to one in a few years.

Graysun's having NO trouble whatsoever, in settling in here. Being the youngster that he is, he's really very pliable at this point.
I've given him the window spot in the family room - the spot that my beloved and fondly remembered Spunks had for years. I didn't think I would ever let another biord inhabit that place, but it's really the practical place for Graysun. Birds need daylight to keep up their levels of vitamin D, so his being next to this southern-facing picture window will help in that respect.

I wish I'd had a camera ready the first time I let him out of his cage in that spot. Actually, it was also his first day with his new and much more spacious digs since we'd brought him home. Anyway, he wanted out, and with my help, he made his way on top of the cage.
Wow! He literally danced with delight. It was really entertaining to watch him daning around all fluffed up and tail spread wide. Squeaking, squealing, whistling and some gutteral clucking like I'd never heard from a bird. I thought he'd never stop.
He's not like this every time he comes out, but he does have his little ritual of flapping and head-bobbing when first let out in the morning. I'm trying to get him into a routine of "going nite-nite" about 7PM. I've been holding him while sitting in my recliner, before returning him to his cage and rolling it into the front room where I cover it for the night. So far, he's so quiet most of the time that you wouldn't know he was here. He plays and naps and eats and plays an....... what a life!

We'll be expecting more pictures, of course, as the little guy settles in. You're really tempting me to make that bird fair at the end of the month. LOL.

I'll do some more pics soon. I need to stay away from those Marts for awhile!
Either that or leave the credit card at home when we go.
